Story Sprouts: Voice features the fearless adventures of 25 aspiring and published children's book authors-- gifted writers who spent one day exploring the mysteries and nuanced expression of Authorial, Narrative and Character Voice. Included are more than 60 works of original poetry and prose. The authors composed in less than 10 hours, as they deepened their understanding of literary devices and sharpened their powers of observation and interpretation. Each learned to speak from the heart of a child, from the soul of an inanimate object, and to faithfully represent a character meticulously created from a photograph. Readers will be touched and inspired, but Story Sprouts is also a rich reference tool for teachers and workshop leaders. The book offers prompts and tips, details the specific workshop techniques used, includes handouts and other materials, and cites a wealth of free online resources--all of which serve to strengthen writers as they pursue their craft.
This book includes one Table of Contents for each of the following: 1. Lessons in Authorial, Character and Narrative Voice and in Revision 2. Included Writing Prompts and Exercises 3. Anthology: Poetry and Prose
This edition also includes an Index of Authors to help readers find their favorite authors' pieces. Each author submitted a minimum of four anthology works for publication.
Even though above it says I'm reviewing the Kindle edition, what I actually have is the paperback edition.
This is a nifty volume. The packaging is attractive and the book would look great on anyone's shelf. Once you delve inside this treasure trove of written expression you'll also find a book content you may want to return to often. It's almost like a college textbook--one of the cool literature books with lot's of author samples to read and a load of good advice. You'll be entertained with good writing and be offered some interesting educational matter as well.
Actually you could probably use this for a college course. There is useful information about writing which is followed up by various writing exercises as they were presented to those attending a workshop of the Children's Book Writers of Los Angeles. Examples of the authors' results are also included in the book: vignettes, memoirs, sketches, poems, and even a collaborative novella. So even if you don't care about writing there is plenty to keep readers enthralled.
At over 500 pages this book is a great bargain.
Since you'll probably be carrying a copy of this around a lot and eventually wear it out, maybe you'd better buy 2 copies so you'll have one to display on your bookshelf. In fact you might want to buy several so you'll have some copies to give as gifts to those in your life who like to write.
Ideal and highly recommended for starters. Excellent for gift giving to friends with children or young adults in the middle and secondary school for their literary and creative writing guidelines. step by step tips on how to conceptualize your ideas into writing. This is a must for those with yearnings for putting ideas. into words. Recommended short stories for bedtime or after school assignments. I particularly love the "The Dragon" it gave moral lessons.Pretty neat!
