The Gollywhopper Games:

Friend or Foe

Synopsis:

Everyone loves the Gollywhopper Games!
Everyone except Zane. What Zane cares about is football. He’s headed straight for the
NFL…until he gets his second concussion. Now his parents say no football for a year. Then along come the Games—a chance to solve puzzles and riddles, win a million dollars, and show up on TV. Zane will need speed, smarts, and strategy. He’ll face tougher rivals than he ever did on a football field. Does he still have what it takes to win when he’s playing a whole new game? Are you ready for action that never quits and surprises and brainteasers at every turn?
Then let the Games begin!

This book was not supposed to exist.
Then magic happened.

Somehow, some way, booksellers, librarians, teachers, and readers picked up a book from an unknown, debut author and spread the word. The Gollywhopper Games, the original title in the series, was designed as a stand-alone, but when it started appearing on state lists (26 of them, I’m told), readers asked for more.

Things don’t always happen the way you might hope or expect, but when magic like this comes into your life, I suggest you celebrate.

The only celebration I didn’t get to have with this, the 3rd in the Gollywhopper series, is that we ran out of physical space to run my acknowledgements. I’m very excited to do that here:

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS:
It takes real teamwork to bring books this far into the world. Not everyone who’s on my team, however, realizes that they are, indeed, members of a greater effort.First, thanks to my experts:Team Football: University of Missouri Assistant Football Coach Cornell Ford for listening to me awkwardly describe Zane to him, then for talking me through which personality types generally gravitate toward playing which specific positions. Also to Dawn Ford whose words made it clear that Zane would play corner. And to Dick Feldman who definitely and happily added to that discussion. Go Tigers!

Medical Team: Dr. Jerry O’Neil and Dr. Joe Goldenberg who were patient in fielding my questions and engaging in concussion discussions.

Any errors in facts about football or concussions are entirely my own.

As always, big thanks to Team Writer, my whole community of kidlit creators. Whether they’re critiquing (and specifically for Friend or Foe, Debby Garfinkle, Mary Beth Miller, and Kate Tuthill) or they’re cheering me on, I’m proud and grateful to be among them. That includes Paige Feldman and Cassie Feldman, my go-to players who jump off the bench at any given moment for name creation, plot bolstering, reality checks, and general morale boosting.

And that segues perfectly into Team Friends & Family who show nothing but support and faith and enthusiasm. I’m a very lucky person.

Finally, you would not be reading this without Team Publishing: agent Jennie Dunham; Sarah Thomson, my amazing editor who has helped me grow exponentially; and Virginia Duncan, Lois Adams, Paul Zakris, and the rest of you wonderful and talented Greenwillowites who not only believe in me, but make this business a true pleasure.
Go Team!

Jody Feldman never knew she always wanted to be a writer when she grew up. If you’d cornered her as a kid, she’d have mentioned doctor or teacher, but that was just an answer. Her passions ran more toward treasure hunter, codebreaker, movie director, or inventor, but her practical side couldn’t imagine how to get there.

Her path to writing meandered through the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a short career in advertising. She wrote a lot about shoes. And lot more. At the same time, she delusionally thought she might become the next Dr. Seuss, but strange rhymes turned to short prose, and short prose turned into novels, and she was hooked.

A lifelong resident of St. Louis, Jody likes to travel, cook, watch football, and solve word puzzles. And she loves knowing she can explore any dream, career, or adventure with the characters in her books.

I absolutely LOVE everything about visiting schools -- talking about my writer's journey, leading workshops, hanging around with teachers and students ... and yes, eating lunch in cafeterias. Upon special request, I'll even do a Gollywhopper Games-themed, interactive session.Even when I can't visit, I love hearing from readers of all ages, and so my new website (coming in mid-December) will be full of interactive opportunities.

Give me a shout! jody@jodyfeldman.com

Kirkus:
“...the fun is in the puzzles and being inside Zane’s head as he works out his answers. Zane is all about the strategy and what is needed to help each team member bring their best work. It’s this altruism, combined with a competitive spirit, that will have readers rooting for these kids.“

Night Owl Reviews (A Top Pick):
"The combination of mental and physical challenges make me wish these games really existed because I think that they would be both fun and educational, and would encourage children to exercise both sets of muscles (mental and physical) ...  This was a fun read with delightful illustrations that I think will be appreciated by both adults and youngsters, and I would love to read more by this author."

Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books:

“This has ‘independent reading book report for reluctant readers’ written all over it.”

School Library Journal:

“Football-loving Zane ... finds himself competing in the Gollywhopper Games alongside a nerdy kid named Elijah. Polar opposites, their strengths complement one another and they become unlikely friends.”

Booklist:
“Nonstop action, appealing pencil illustrations, and increasingly difficult brainteasers will keep readers engaged.”
