I am an Artist, Teacher and Mother, and what I would most love to add to that list would be Picture Book Author and Illustrator!
With the help and support of PiBoIdMo, 12 x 12, the Children’s Book Academy and SCBWI, I am working on several picture book manuscripts. I take part in two monthly critique groups alongside some talented members of the Children’s Book Academy and SCBWI. I recently received feedback on my first submission to Rate Your Story and was very encouraged with a rating of 3. I consider myself to be at the polishing stage of my work before getting ready to submit to literary agents.
I started actively blogging in January 2014 with the aim to document my aspiring picture book author and illustrator journey and hopefully provide useful resources and articles to the kidlit writing community. My free Picture Book Template for the amazing writing software Scrivener has proved popular so far.
My background is as an exhibiting painter and printmaker following a BA in Fine Art from the University of East London in 1997. I used to exhibit my work annually and have had exhibitions in Italy and the UK. Some exhibitions were publicly supported by the Arts Council of England. My artwork has gone to private collections in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and Italy.
Amazing jobs that I have had include Capital Fundraising for The National Centre for Children’s Books, Seven Stories’ fabulous building and spending three magical months making and decorating carnival masks in Venice, Italy. Of course, Motherhood is the most amazing job of all (I have two boys).
I have an MA in Computer Animation which lead to a Fellowship with The DigitalCity to work on my original short film “A Small Room” which also attracted public funding from Northern Film and Media. I am a qualified teacher and have taught drawing and animation at various colleges and, most recently, Teesside University.
