ABOUT ALICIA SCHWAB

  • Alicia Schwab writes and illustrates for children’s books. After she obtained her BFA in art and design from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, her career began by co-founding a graphic design firm in Hannover, Germany where she illustrated non-fiction books. Now Alicia illustrates with acrylics and pixels in Minnesota. She has illustrated the books: Great Group Skits (for teens) and Finding Peace After Pet Loss (for adults). In her free time, she is the Illustrator Coordinator for SCBWI Minnesota and facilitates the chapter’s Postcard Gallery and the annual Banner Contest. Alicia lives with her adventurous husband, daughter, and their dog that accompany her on long walks past ponds and marshes.

ARTIST STATEMENT

  • Alicia Schwab’s stories are largely influenced by her childhood growing up in the lush wooded hills of southern Wisconsin. The forest shrouded their home in an almost secret world immersed with wild things that inspired Alicia’s imagination. Her architect Dad’s constant construction and deconstruction of parts of the house caused an occasional curious creature to tip-toe inside to see what all the fuss was about. Alicia also spent many happy hours building forts with her siblings and drawing with her older brother.

My artwork is an examination of characters in their environments. I create images with acrylics and pixels that explore the beautiful chaos of childhood. Children’s needs and concerns are fascinating and sometimes comical. I write lyrical picture books that play with language and humor because I love to laugh.
