ABOUT CHRISTOPHER "CS" JENNINGS

  • Aloha!

I’m CS Jennings. I’m an illustrator and author living in Austin, Texas. Creativity, design, storytelling, collaboration—these are the things that get me excited. I’m the Austin chapter Illustrator coordinator. I’m represented by the awesome Jill Corcoran Literary Agency.

I write and draw children’s books. I wrote the board book Hello, Texas! (Sterling Publishing). I am the author-illustrator of the picture book Animal Band (also Sterling Publishing). As an illustrator I’ve drawn chapter books for Penguin Group Books, a stack of books for Scholastic, and the Incredible Rockhead graphic novels for Stone Arch Books. I love collaborating with art directors and editors. (I especially enjoy the revision process of the book. Weird, I know.) Storytelling has always inhabited my drawing. As I write more, it finds its expression in words. I’m looking forward to where I’m going next.

I also draw lots of stuff. I do a ton of illustration for the children’s markets, but I go wherever my pencil will take me. Publishing, gaming, editorial, advertising, entertainment, commercial, apparel, apps, greeting cards—yep, I’ve pretty much done everything that has to do with drawing. (I was an animation lead for Richard Linklater’sA Scanner Darkly. That’s still one of my favorite things I’ve done.)

ARTIST STATEMENT

  • When people see my work, I hope they find a smile. I hope when someone encounters my drawings or writing, they laugh. Joy is what I want to convey. It’s always been that way for me. It just what comes out when I work. I think that’s why the children’s industry is a fit for me. It’s a place where it’s still ok to smile.
