ABOUT JULIE BAYLESS

  • I have a BFA in Animation/Illustration from San Jose State University, and a BA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University.  I spent many years as an animator prior to beginning my illustration career, and have worked at Electronic Arts, as well as with several clients on a freelance basis.

My first author/illustrator picture book, Roar!, published by Running Press, was released in 2015.  I am under contract to illustrate “Crawly School for Bugs”, written by David L. Harrison, to be released in 2017.  I am currently the Illustrator Coordinator for the SF/North & East Bay SCBWI Region.
    My awards include:
    • Best Portfolio, 2014 Western Washington SCBWI Conference.
    • Best Portfolio 2014 Golden Gate SCBWI SF/South Conference.
    • Best Portfolio 2013 SCBWI Oakland Conference.
    • Runner Up Portfolio, 2012 SCBWI Spring Spirit Conference.
    • Best Postcard, 2011 SCBWI Illustrator’s Day, Sacramento, CA.

ARTIST STATEMENT

  • I love drawing and painting my characters and environments with a full range of emotion. Stylistically, I aim for looseness, a sense of weight and clean, spare compositions.  I strive to get the maximum of story-telling from a single picture.  My principal media are pencil, watercolor and Photoshop.

I am thrilled to be represented by John Cusick of the Folio Jr. Literary Agency. I am also the Illustrator Coordinator for SCBWI San Francisco North and East Bay Region.

    Cheers!

    Julie
