SCBWI is composed of over 70 regions within the United States and throughout the world. Members join through the executive office, automatically becoming members of their local chapter. While there are no local dues, fees may be charged for some local chapter activities like meetings, conferences, or workshops. In addition to the national newsletter, each local chapter is encouraged to have its own newsletter that would be available by separate subscription.

Regional Advisors coordinate SCBWI events and activities for members in chapters all over the world. Meetings and workshops feature well-known writers, illustrators, and others involved in literature for young people; critique groups, shoptalk groups, newsletters containing regional information of interest to writers and illustrators, and social events enable members to share experiences and make friendships. Members receive substantial discounts on admission to regional events.

Regional Advisors and their supporting staff and volunteers devote incredible amounts of energy and time to organize and implement the activities and publications they produce for their regional members. The SCBWI would not function as well as it does without the support of these dedicated volunteers.
