This year’s Books For Readers recipients are two wonderful organizations that do so much for kids in many facets of their lives. The books are coming in by the cartload at our office through the generosity of SCBWI members. Are you one of them? Donations will be accepted through July 9; go to the FAQ on the website for more information.
The Literacy Alliance in Oviedo, FL “…encourage
Central Florida residents to reach their highest potential by increasing literacy through diverse educational resources, programs, and training opportunities.” As described in the nomination by SCBWI member Leslie Santamaria, the organization served over 1,200 children in 2017 by providing literacy programs and donating books to many organizations on a regular basis, including the Coalition for the Homeless, the Juvenile Detention Center, the Midway Safe Harbor after-school program, Give Kids the World—which assists kids with life threatening illnesses—and daycare centers in low-income areas.
The Indian Education Program in Fargo, ND “…advocates for Native American students’ success in school while providing cultural opportunity connections for students and families.” From the nomination from SCBWI member Tory Christie, who nominated the Indian Education Program, the program “…strives to increase school attendance and graduation rates of Native American students who represent twenty-six tribes, ranging from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. The goal of improving educational outcomes for Native American students cannot be met without a generous supply of books.”
There will be donation celebrations at each location later this year. We look forward to awarding these great organizations with your wonderful books.
