Art portfolios must be submitted for display according to guidelines made available during conference registration. See display submission guidelines in the Showcase section of the conference page. Only full-time conference attendees are eligible for the award. There is no prior application process for this award. Portfolios will be judged at the conference by a panel of top professionals. SCBWI reserves the right not to confer this award in any given year.
The Portfolio Award (available at both the New York and Los Angeles conferences)
Awarded to the top three portfolios as determined by a panel of judges including industry professionals and renowned illustrators.
Grand Prize: Trip to New York, appointments with three art directors
Two Honors: Phone conversation with an art director for a portfolio/style/illustration critique
Illustration Mentorship Award (available only at the Los Angeles conference)
The Illustration Mentorship Award is given at the Annual Summer Conference in Los Angeles. The goal is to identify, develop and nurture publishable illustrators. The winners are chosen by a separate panel of judges from the Portfolio Award, including SCBWI Board members.
-Six illustrators from the portfolio showcase are chosen as a Mentee for advanced level critique and mentoring.
-The winners are announced at the Portfolio Showcase opening. Winners must be in attendance at the showcase in order to win.
-Mentees meet with each Board Illustrator Committee Mentor for a 15-minute one-on-one session to discuss their work, ask questions, get suggestions, and be challenged to take his/her work to the next level.
-Mentors and Mentees meet as a group to share information, tips, and create career development strategies.
