Title: Group hug for Poets ... Who's had success submitting or selling poetry?
Post by: CarrieLee on May 11, 2012, 07:11 AM
It can be such a slim hard market out there for poetss. Sometimes it's so far between those elusive yes-es, you start to think there's no hope anywhere. So I thought it might be nice to hear if anyone has a recent success with their poetry whether in magazines, anthologies, books, newspapers.   Come share your bit of hope and happiness, won't you?     :grouphug2   :artist1:

Well, this isn't children's- but I finally got a poem accepted by June Cotner for her anthology, Gratitude Prayers, due out next spring. I've been trying to get one in for years! In the children's world, I will have a poem in July's issue of Pockets.

I sold several poems to educational site Time4Learning some time ago.
It's difficult to find anyone who will even look at poetry; most agents won't touch it, so it's a challenge to find an avenue for it.

I'm sorry this thread is not longer. I've sold poetry to Ladybug and Highlights and Once Upon a Time.

Hi CarrieLee-

I love your subject line. A group hug is definitely called for!

I've sold poems recently to Babybug and Ladybug. I also have a poem in the anthology "And the Crowd Goes Wild: A Global Gathering of Sports Poems" which is coming out in August. But you are right, the acceptances are few and far between. It's frustrating that there are not more markets.

So far, I've only had success with adult poetry markets. You're right, Vijaya, it's a shame this thread isn't longer...

This is a tad bit on the older side, but in 2010, my poetry critique group published our MG anthology, AN EYEBALL IN MY GARDEN--AND OTHER SPINE-TINGLING POEMS.

I've sold several poems for adults, but never anything for children. And it's not like I haven't tried...

So proud to be  hanging out with people who HAVE succeeded, though! ;)

I just started submitting poetry for children and adults. I haven't had any published yet, but I've received some kind words regarding the poems. I should here back on a few more by June... :ceilingdance

I've sold one poem to an international religious magazine for children (called The Friend), but they haven't printed it yet.  I signed the contract in 2009 (or was it 2008?) and I'm still waiting to see if they publish it.
They may never do so, but at least they pay when you sign the contract and not pay upon publication.

Last year I sold poems to Highlights for Children, Stories for Children, Spaceports and Spidersilk, Pockets, Beyond Centauri and Literature For Kids (the latter has not been open for submissions for some time now and they haven't published an issue since October, but say they will be publishing new issues soon. Hope so, I have a lot of things lined up to be in them, including poetry).

This year I've sold poems to Stories for Children, Spaceports and Spidersilk and Hopscotch.

I've also sold poetry for adults.

But I must agree, it is a tough market. But don't give up.

Group hug to all.

Congratulations to all of you who have had sales! As others have said, it's a tough market.

Neal, I enjoyed reading your fun "It's Summertime" in Pockets.  An exuberant, joyous celebration of the season. :cheerleader

Not sure what constitutes "recent."  My more recent poetry publications have been in Stories for Children, Guardian Angel Kids, and Boys' Quest.

I've published a fair number of poems, but all in the adult market, and almost none of them paid anything.  It's such a  different world!

The good news is that the same skills I developed with poetry have been a lot of help in revising and perfecting my other work, especially picture books! Not to get all Pollyanna, but that's one way to look at it- that your poetry is in ALL your work.  Poetry is the best lines in a novel, a particularly lovely refrain in a picture book, etc.

My first publishing credit was a poem in Stories for Children. I also had two poems/action rhymes accepted to Highlights High Five, but not sure when they'll be published.

I have poetry in the latest issues of Guardian Angel Kids and Spaceports & Spidersilk (links to both at my website on my "Guy Writes for Children" page). Also had two holiday poems -- for Mother's Day and Father's Day -- published late last month by Super Teacher Worksheets (again, links at my site). And I have children's poetry scheduled for publication this year in Beyond Centauri (in July) and Stories for Children (two poems in the Oct/Nov. Fall issue).

Neal, congrats on your poem in Pockets!

kathy444, yes, it seems one usually doesn't find out until a couple months before when Highlights and Highlights High Five will be publishing accepted work. They've published a couple of my puzzles this year, but I didn't learn the publication dates for those until I received my sample copies a month or so before. And I have no idea when they will be publishing the poem and other puzzles of mine that they have accepted. But they pay right after acceptance which is nice!

The magazine market for children's poetry may be small, but at least there is one! Within the last year, I've sold poems to HIGHLIGHTS FOR CHILDREN, Focus on the Family's CLUBHOUSE JR., and BOYS' QUEST.  I've also had acceptances in recent years from the CRICKET group and although I have not subbed to them in the past year, I know they still have need for poetry so they're still on my market short-list.

I've sold some poetry to HFC, the Bulletin and a greeting card company (does that count?). I am hungry to sell a book of poetry, but not sure how lucrative it would be. I'm working on it, though! :)

I think a good way to find places especially open to poetry is to go to a book store and find poetry books and look at their publishers. It's worth a shot! :)

I've sold poetry to Cricket, Spider, Ladybug, and a couple of other magazines. It's funny that I should come across this post tonight because last week I was gathering my published samples for a poetry talk with some students and I had one of those moments where I thought, "I wrote that? Dang. That's pretty good." Although I enjoy writing poetry and have had some success selling it, I tend to undervalue it compared to my other writing projects, and for no good reason. So, I appreciate taking a moment to hug my fellow poets. :)

In the past few years, I've sold poems to Hopscotch, Ladybug, Highlights, Highlights High Five. I haven't been writing much poetry lately, focusing more on books, but Highlights and the Carus group are my top two picks. I've been very happy with the finished products in those mags.

Definitely joining in on the group hug for poets  :grouphug2  Poetry can be difficult to find a publishing home for...but I love it, and I don't think I'll ever give it up entirely!

Personally, I find prose much more difficult to write and submit. Partially because I don't practice as much. I prefer the structure of metrical verse, whether I'm writing something short or pb-length.

I've had a few poems published in magazines:  Ladybug, one coming up in Highlights, Fun For Kidz, Pockets, Fandangle,   maybe 30 or so altogether.  I've had way more poems for adults make it into lit. mags and anthologies.  You'd think it would be the other way around, that the market would be better for children's poetry, but that doesn't seem to be the case for me.

I have a poem posted today (plus a video of me reading it) at No Water River.

No Water River is an amazing and totally unique resource on the Internet -- Renee LaTulippe has been collecting videos of poets reading their own poems and has quite a library now. She also includes really thoughtful extension activities for teachers and students. She also has a collection of videos of herself reading classic children's poems.

Just wanted to mention, I recently went to the Scholastic Book Fair at my daughter's school, and I would say about 60% of the picture books were written in rhyme.

On a side note, I was excited to see three blueboarders represented! Jean Reidy ("Too Princessy!"--written in rhyme), Tammi Sauer, and Jodi Moore. :)

Recently received an e-mail that I'm getting a Haiku published in Scifaikuest part of sams dot publishing, but it's an adult magazine.  I'm always looking for new markets too.

Also congrats. to all the poets on this board, and getting your work out for everyone to see.    ::-)

How fun is that onestepp? Sci fi poetry is a personal fav of mine, so I'm a bit jealous. (grin).  I'll have to settle for my one bit of May happiness with a poem in Clubhouse Magazine's May issue.  Anybody else got new happy poetry news? I'd love to live vicariously!

Thanks for noticing, Cindy!  :thankyou

That one came as a surprise to me. With the last one, they informed me six months prior to publication. But this time, not a peep. I wonder if they inform ahead of time only if you have at least a full page? I didn't get my comp copies yet but I DID get my subscriber copy so I got to see it! Jody actually let me know about it. (Thanks, Jody!) They did change my wording slightly, but upon reflection, I think I do like the line they changed.

Anyway, thanks again.

Congrats on your acceptance, rainchains. FWIW, my poem in the August issue was accepted by them in April 2011. The last poem they published of mine also took about 2 years.

Thanks Diana,

Well two years is not so bad in 'writing time.'

Maybe we should start a new thread for Highlights? Instead of 'response times' one for 'published times.'

Yes, in writing time, that's practically the blink of an eye! Or maybe a slow wink.

I do sometimes update in the response times thread with a publication date. It would be interesting to see how magazines differ.

Congrats Carrie, Rainchains, Awful Waffles, and Diana!

Yep, the only poem I've had accepted by Highlights still hasn't been published in 7 years. It's easy for me to remember its acceptance because I shared the exciting news with my mom when she was in the hospital just before she died. And she died seven years ago today.
Title: Re: Group hug for Poets ... Who's had success submitting or selling poetry?
Post by: CarrieLee on July 08, 2013, 03:42 PM
Oh, Ev. My sympathies on the anniversary of your mom's passing. And another Oh! for the seven year wait. I confess to being impatient for publication after just 18 months -- although just to be clear, that wasn't with Highlights.
Title: Re: Group hug for Poets ... Who's had success submitting or selling poetry?
Post by: DianaM on July 09, 2013, 08:18 PM
Wow, that's a long wait, Ev! But it will be a nice surprise when it's published. Maybe you could even status query them?

I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I'm glad you were able to share the exciting news with her.

:rainHi, I was recently looking over SCBWI THE BOOK International Mkt Survey beginning p. 59. Noticed that many presses, eg, Canadian, accept poetry whereas in America, only Wordsong. Poetry doesn't sell in US? Is poetry dead in US? Why7? I've published in several magazines: Highlights High-Five, Ladybug, Spider, Pockets, Story Friends. Gave up submitting to magazines about 3 years ago in order to organize my hundreds of poems into book/submission form. Because v. busy in addition, just sent out first collection to Wordsong May 2013. Waiting to hear. Since sending, however, learned that the most popular poem topic is "bugs." My collection is Bugs in Your House. Also learned that Wordsong just (as in 2013) published a bug poem book: Face Bug. So...two strikes against. And discovered, stumbled upon, a great non-USA poet: Lynley Dodd from New Zealand. V. popular internationally. Anyone else know her? Like her. She's also a fantastic illustrator--hard to say which she does better, write or illustrate. I think American kids would enjoy HER poetry, but she seems to be unknown here. My huge local library system (King County Seattle) owned only one! of her books (until I suggested buying). I think this is the sort of poetry that young kids love--lots of rhyme, rhythm, loving and adorable, fun, funny, innocent, animals, upbeat.

Post by: CarrieLee on August 30, 2013, 08:47 AM
Hey Emily ... I understand your dismay with the rather "anti-poetry" verbiage you hear while querying/submitting to US publishers and magazines.  I find that a lot of the reticence comes from beleaguered editors and agents who've been bombarded with reams of badly done verse.  They develop a sad, but understandable, flinch reaction -- and many have simply defaulted to saying "I don't want to read anything written in rhyme or metered verse".

This saddens me both as a reader and an author, because I think some wonderful work may be falling on the wayside, and never finding a publishing home. I know my life as a young reader would have been poorer without Dr. Seuss, Shel Silverstein, et al.

I do agree with you that in Canada/UK/Australia the market seems to be a little more kind to poetry, esp traditional rhyme.  Thanks for the note on Lynley Dodd. I've put her on my to read list. I'm a huge fan of Julia Donaldson from the UK, myself.

But take heart, it isn't impossible to sell a poetry collection in the US, clearly  people like Kenn Nesbit and Jack Prelutsky are doing well at it, just to name two.  We'll keep our fingers crossed for you.

Congrats to everyone who has been having success with their poetry.  It can be a hard sell, for sure.  I have a couple of poems that were accepted for publication 10 years ago, waiting to appear in two of the larger children's magazines.  Will they ever be published?  Hope so! Both are seasonal, which might explain part of the reason why it's taking so long.  However, I've recently had poems placed successfully in Ladybug, Pockets, & Fun for Kidz.  I just received an acceptance from Cricket and had a couple of poems accepted by Schoolwide.   I find it more difficult to find a home for my children's poems than I do poetry for adults.  The likely reason is that there are fewer outlets for poetry in the kidslit world.  There are many, many lit mags out there that accept poetry.

Congratulations on the Sparkle publication, Cindy!  :hurrah

Over the years, I've had poems published in Wee Ones, KidVisions, Spaceports and Spidersilk, Fandangle, Stories for Children, Cecil Child, Beyond Centauri, and one in an anthology published by Tangerine Sky Productions, but none in any of the big mags. My last acceptance/publication was in 2012 and was an acrostic poem to Beyond Centauri.

For the last couple years, on the poetry front, the only thing I had been writing and submitting was haiku for adults--and have had haiku appearing pretty regularly in journals. Actually, I just had my 100th haiku accepted a few weeks ago.  :grin3

This year I've decided to start submitting poetry (as well as fiction and nonfiction) to children's magazines again.

I look forward to hearing more good news from you all! This thread has been very inspiring.  :yup

Thanks, Cindyb!

Giselle, I just looked up my records. One of the poems was submitted in October, 2013, and the other was August, 2009!! I didn't even realize it had been that long. Highlights pays on acceptance, though, so that's nice. :-)

Wow, and thank goodness! This certainly isn't the business to be in if you're not the patient type.  ;)

I've not checked this thread in ages and it's nice to see all the new good news!

Congratulations Carrie, Gisele, Jody, Ev and Cindy!!!! If I missed anybody, it's not intentional. I've not subbed any poetry recently but I did buy a lovely little book called Poemmaking. It's going to be my spring-break study/play.

It's been too quiet in here for too long. Time to jump in with some summer good news.  Just sold my fourth picture book in rhyme --  :running  :bunnyshake :bunnyshake :bunnyshake

So when all those "voices" tell you it's not possible, listen to your own heart instead!

Now, who else has good news we can celebrate?

Okay, now I've had the chance to look at my granddaughter's Ladybug, and congrats to CarrieF again! Plus I saw Dionna's poem, too. And if any of you have access to Spider, I have a poem in it this month. Yay for Blueboard poets!

My first time on this thread and I'm so happy to join you in celebrating poets and poetry!  :stars3

Carrie, I love "Grandma's Letter" and "Dinosaur Stomp!"  I have a fiction piece in the Sept. 2015 Ladybug. So nice to see your wonderful poems!

Diana M - Love your "Dance Your Way" action rhyme!

Dionna -  "In My Suit" is so cute!

All wonderful  poems to share with my new group of Kindergarten kids!   :flowers2

Sorry if I missed anyone in the Sept. Ladybug or High Five. I have to check out the Sept. Spider for your poem, Cindy!

I've been subbing poetry off and on for a few years and I'm so excited to break into Highlights this summer with three poems! I have 2 poems accepted for Hello and one for High Five.   :love5

Hugs,
Sue

Sue, looked up your story in Ladybug- clever! I look forward to seeing your poem in High Five! (A grandchild gets that magazine, but no access to Hello. I don't have any grandkids that little anymore.)  I did find the Humpty Dumpty Sept./Oct. issue reprinted my only poem sold to them. That was a fun discovery.

I have a poem, "Stable Sounds" coming up in the Dec issue of Clubhouse Jr., and just received payment for a recently accepted poem by Highlights.  Not sure when it will appear.  I'm still waiting on a seasonal poem they accepted in 2008, but those do take longer to place. I have also had two poems accepted by Cricket--again, not scheduled yet.

Just found out one of my poems is in the current Guardian Angel Kids. They never sent notification. Does anyone know when I should expect payment? I'm guessing it will be the 15 of this month.

YAY, Debbie!  :stars3  Congratulations!

It's been a few years since I had something published with GAK, so I don't have current info on payment timing. Sorry.
