I love many things! I decorate cakes for fun -- see the marvelous wedding cake I made for my grandson!
http://www.verlakay.com/page9/page22/page22.html
I love playing computer games (but not the "shoot-em-up" kind - I like adventure, mind teasing games) and my favorite is an online game called Puzzle Pirates. I can be found many nights in my pirate persona of "Ramboetta," sailing on a ship on the high seas. Battles with enemy ships are fought via a Tetris-style game, as are all the other activities done on the ships and in the island shops.
Fishing, cooking, and reading are three more of my favorite activities. I also love scrapbooking, although it's been a long time since I've had access to my huge supply of scrapbook materials. They've been in storage for 6 years! I finally got them out last year, but haven't had time yet to play with them. But I will....
And of course, I love to write! At the moment, I'm in between stories. I'm hard at work on a WWII POW story that is totally non-fiction and completely different from any of my rhyming picture books. It's an amazing story and I hope to have it done and submitted to different markets before the end of this year.
What books do you have out?
"Hornbooks & Inkwells"
"Gold Fever"
"Civil War Drummer Boy"
"Whatever Happened to the Pony Express?"
"Iron Horses"
"Tattered Sails"
"Covered Wagons, Bumpy Trails" OP
"Homespun Sarah" OP
"Broken Feather" OP
"Orphan Train" PO
"Rough Tough Charley" OP
All of my books are written in my signature style of rhyme that I call Cryptic Rhyme -- short, terse, cryptic verses -- hence my name for them. OP are books that are currently either Out of Print or that are going out of print. They can be purchased directly from me.

And on top of all of Verla's many achievements, she has founded the best kid-lit chat board there ever was.
*THIS ONE*
Because she set the rules, and her hard working administrators and moderators kept vigil to enforce them, it is the most civil, friendly, warm and chuck full of information and networking place a writer for children could hope for.

Love the cake, Verla! It's beautiful. You are an inspiration in so many ways. Thanks.
-
Amazing cake! What a handsome groom and gorgeous bride, too.
I'll ditto what Pons said, you are an inspiration! :verla

Gorgeous cake! I have copied some of Verla's recipes (the simple kind) and they've all turned out so well. In fact, my husband will get Verla's lemon cake for his birthday.
What she doesn't say here is that not only can she decorate a cake, but she's handy with tools too, and can fix up a house.
A woman of many talents! We are so blessed to know you and take part in this fabulous community.
Thank you!

And a crackerjack bicyclist (I seem to remember)!

Wow! What a beautiful cake! I can't even imagine attempting something like that.
....where might this lemon cake recipe be???
-
It's on the Off Topic board, that redhead.

It's really easy to make, Dianna.

Awww, how wonderful that you did that for your grandson. *sniff-sniff* And what a beautiful cake! :cupcake

And last, but not least--Verla is one all-around WAY COOL woman!

You know... I also made a cake for one of my granddaughter's wedding reception, too... Don't know if it's too big to post or not. I'll try.... Nope file too large.I'll post it again on my Facebook page....

What beautiful cake:)
-
Thanks. :-)
-
Amazing!!!
And I know what it's like to have stuff in storage... such a joy to get that stuff out.
PS Ellen, I love that you used the word 'crackerjack' – for me it's a kids' TV programme. I've never heard it used in day-to-day speech!
-
Oh, I know, Siski. My slang needs some updating. That's what happens when you're an isolated writer.
-
Great job on the cakes AND everything else you do!
-
Your books are brilliant, Verla!!!
-
I'm still so new to the boards but I'm incredibly grateful for this forum. You can't know how much it has helped me. And those cakes! Wow. Almost makes me want to go through my wedding again...almost. :lol4
Thank you for sharing your many talents. :thankyou
-
Thanks, Everyone. To be honest about all of this, though, I have gotten as much or more from these boards as anyone! It's amazing the amount of information you have all shared here. I am in awe of the talent, experience and loving, caring, and sharing of everyone on this board! You are all the BEST. :love4:

Thank you for all your hard work Velra! I just joined the SCBWI the day before all the changes, so. I have been waiting patiently for the board to open up. I am also a member of a few other online forums and find them to be one of the most valuable resource! So, rest assure, I should be an easy member, hee hee. I just read though all the rules! I only had one problem. I attempted to register twice and my birthday won't take. I have started at the top of forum and I'm working my way down! but I do not see a response section for tech problems (example: if I had trouble registering; such as my birthdate not taking, as this is a requirement).
On a more personal note, I have not read any of your books. But after reading about you, I am very curious about your rhyming! That is impressive; to create your own style of rhythm and rhyme! I hope to read your work soon!
Take care!
Amber :)

Thank you for sharing, ancient amber. There is a HELP board in the FAQ area of the board. I recommend adding your birthdate info problem to that board. One of the administrators will try to help you get your birthday into the system. We are still working through a lot of little bugs (and a few big ones) from the merger!

What a wonderful cake! My daughter-in-law would love to see these pics as cake making is her favorite pass-time. Such a fantastic job you did! I bet the happy recipients were in complete awe.
Thank you also, Verla, for all the hard work you've gone to to make this such a great place for writers to interact with one another, to find information, to share ideas, accomplishments, questions and angst. It's a special place to belong. It feels so good to be here. :)
-
:embarrassed3 Aww, thanks, Bev.
-
I can almost taste how delicious that cake is! Your grandson must be proud.
Thanks for all you do, Verla!!!
-
Heh, heh. It's been years.... That cake is long gone.
