Title: Nontraditional Picture Book Biography recommendations
Post by: hayley-diep on March 24, 2021, 02:53 PM
Hello All!

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for picture book biographies that are a little less traditional that I could study (not so linear). The only example I can think of is Before She Was Harriet.

Thanks!
Hayley

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I enjoyed Mary Wears What She Wants by Keith Negley, Preaching to the Chickens by Jabari Asim, and The Important Thing About Margaret Wise Brown by Mac Barnett.

Donna Janell Bowman has a blog where she talks a lot about PB Biographies and different ways to structure them. Here is a link to her archives: https://www.donnajanellbowman.com/category/picture-book-biographies/

Just a ways down is a post about structure. But I'm sure if you scroll down more, you'll find some more helpful posts.

I'll look through my notes of bios I have typed up as mentor texts later today and jump back here if any unusual structures jump out at me. I love PB Bios!

I took a class from her. One of the best I have ever taken.

This is super late, but I just saw this and thank you so much for sharing that awesome link! I have a better idea of how to play around with the structure after seeing that. Thank you!

I'm late to this thread, but I'll offer up a handout I have from some of my writing classes with examples of nonfiction picture books by text structure. I hope it sparks some ideas! https://creatingcuriouskids.files.wordpress.com/2021/05/nf-pb-structures.pdf

A PB biography that I recently read with a unique structure was The Diamond and the Boy by Hannah Holt, illustrated by Jay Fleck.
