Title: Parallel Story Structure
Post by: poet on February 24, 2013, 06:27 PM
Hi all:

I'm trying to gather as many titles of picture books that use a parallel story structure as I can.  BLUEBERRIES for SAL, by Robert McCloskey, is a classic example of this structure.  I'd appreciate any title suggestions you can think of.  Thanks so much!

I got these from a site called Simple Plot Structures

Just Like Daddy by Asch

Click! by Crum

Meanwhile Back at the Ranch by Noble (one of my favorites because it is funny)

SOMETHING FROM NOTHING by Phoebe Gilman does this in an ingenious way- a whole parallel storyline unfolds in illustrations only along with the main storyline. She is the author/illustrator and to my mind this is a great example of what only a PB can do.

Thanks, Mirka!  I'll add that to my list.  SNOW LAMBS by Debi Gliori uses the same technique (I'm guessing.)  Can't wait to read it.

Ame Dyckman's BOY + BOT came to mind--not sure if that's the parallel structure you're looking for.

Jan Brett's borders often have some other story going on. It's not always parallel, though.

Tough Boris by Mem Fox (Illustrated by Kathryn Brown) has a parallel story in the illustrations which complements the text.

Oooh, wonderful!  I've been away from the boards for a couple of days.  How DELIGHTFUL to come back to find some new titles for me to explore.  Thanks much!
