This may fall outside of what you want, but Dover has a beautiful coloring book of the National Parks. It has a page for every park in the United States with beautiful line art and a snippet about each park. Do you live near a National Park or National Park Site?  Each part of the country is divided into regions and each region runes a store in the Park or Site, these stores often have books that relate to each individual park/site or it's period that is aimed at children. 

I live in the same town at the George Rogers Clark Memorial Park and I know the park store has books that relate to GRC and the time he was in Vincennes, IN.  The also have a "Passport" Book that is aimed just at children.  (Where you get your passport stamped at each part and site that you stop at and they sell yearly stamps to paste into your book - great for traveling).

LeslieG mentioned some of my favorite books on the parks.  I will have to check my book list for more.

A fun mg is Kristin Tubb's AUTUMN WINIFRED OLIVER DOES THINGS DIFFERENT, which is historical fiction about the establishment of a park in the Smoky Mountains.

 Downriver and River Thunder by Will Hobbs (Grand Canyon), Frozen Stiff by Sherry Shahan (Denali), the Roland Smith I,Q series all take place at National Historic Sites or end up there.

I noticed that most of the major books on parks are on Western parks.  I think you need to remember anything taking place in Philadelphia around Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, etc. would be considered a National Historic Park.  Same with Washington, D.C. Mall area.  Gettysburg and other National battlefields such as Shiloh. 

I really suggest you send for or look up on the NPS site the list of all National Parks, sites, monuments, waterways, etc.  There are probably a lot more books out there than you may think.
