I want to market my short story which features issues related to the Holocaust. My lead character is a girl who's twelve and here  is a brief synopsis:

How do you teach a young girl about love and survival? Ruth Gold is about to experience the magic of her dying Zaidy's (grandfather) 1920's Wurlitzer radio which transports the two of them through three remarkable journeys. Each one brings Ruth closer to understanding the truth of her Zaidy's courage to survive the Holocaust, and find the love that would transform his life.

Haunted, there is a list of mags for kids here: http://www.evelynchristensen.com/mags.html. It might not be fully up to date but you can research. A lot depends on your word count. Mags specifically for the Jewish children's market are hard to come by. But if the lessons and relationship are universal, you can try any that are not specifically for another religious group.

Thanks, Debbie. As usual you are incredibly helpful. Just one comment here - why assume this is for Jewish readers? If a story features an African-American protagonist, is it only for African-American readers? I want this to be for a broad audience.

This is why I mentioned both the general and the specific Jewish markets. I didn't know what you had in mind for it. The use of Zaidy (Zaide) makes the story feel Jewish because the word is Yiddish. And actually, I do think some see the Holocaust as Jewish themed, especially if the characters are Jewish, but it has much broader implications, of course. I hope you can sell it for a broad audience.

I think I mentioned in another thread that I sold a piece to a Jewish press. The story to me also had broader appeal, though it contains a Yiddish word and Rosh Hashana. (It fit the New Beginnings theme Highlights ran a year or two ago.) Publications that paid more than the Jewish press all rejected it, so I went to the next highest potential bidder.  I always start with Highlights and Cricket Media and work my way down from them.

In any case, good luck on the submissions.
