Title: Haunted States of America Contest
Post by: kenneth-major on December 21, 2020, 09:00 PM
One of my critique group members and I are working on stories for the subject contest. I emailed the contact person with a question and so far have not received a response . My question is as follows: Does the story need to be nonfiction or can it be a fictional story that mixes in ghostly NF elements?  Any information on this question would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I think the instructions of "Inspired by local/regional events or myths"  give a lot of freedom.

They also say "We hope you will put your own spin on the story, your own voice and/or background, to ensure that the story is relevant to our contemporary times."

So I'd say there's a fair amount of latitude. And I think the "place" is more important than veracity.

Just my opinion though. I am not connected to the contest.

Hi David,

Thank you for responding. My gut was that they were looking for NF, but my critique partner thought otherwise. Hopefully, we will get a response from the contest contact person soon. I emailed the person three days ago.

I'm with David. The instructions give a lot leeway whether the story is fiction or nonfiction: "Nationally known or relatively unheard of, based in fact or based entirely in local lore, these stories should capture the spooky side of the U.S."  Good luck.

The people I've known who've submitted have written fiction and that was my take too, but I thought the deadline had passed. Never mind. I see they extended it. Good luck.

Debbie and Vijaya,

Thank you for your response.  I never did get a response, which I thought was strange. As a result, my critique partner and I just submitted our entries.

They did acknowledge my entry via an email response copy of the entry. But that wasn't the issue. I had a specific question that never got answered. But that's okay. I just wanted to clarify thing. Thanks.

I heard the short list will be decided by January 30 and the final decision, in conjunction with the publisher, is expected by March 15.

The Insight that came out today mentioned they were still deciding. (It was at the end of the diversity events piece.) Continued good luck to those who entered.

Ken, you might consider trying a magazine for your story, either before the book pubs or a few years after it. I think the magazines are going to see a slew of these for a while. Onward!

Hi Debbie,

Thanks for the heads up on Insight details regarding the Haunted States entries. I am in the process of trying to find a magazine that might seriously consider my story. I really appreciate all the advice I get from people on the Blueboard.

I'm assuming they aren't in a rush to pick winners, as they have until October 31st haha.

Does anyone know how long of a lead time do they need to put a book like this into print by October?

Hi everyone,
Last week I received a reply to an email I sent, and was told they're in the second round of judging. The message also mentioned that if you haven't received an official "no" from them, this means you are in the second round!  It finished with, "We will notify everyone soon."
Good luck to all!
cheers,

FYI, back in early February, I received a rejection letter for the contest. I decided to take my finished ms and try to get it published elsewhere. I'm happy to report that I was successful in doing so. My entry was written as a NF piece, which might have hurt my chances in the contest. Anyway, the ms was published several weeks ago in Paranormal Underground Magazine and I actually got paid for it! So if anyone falls short on getting into the book, try what I did. Good luck .

Several people mentioned getting rejections right around the time of the Winter Conference.

I checked in with SCBWI a couple of weeks ago. It's my understanding that the remaining entries are in the hands of the publisher, but it's taking longer than originally thought to get the final decisions.

Good luck to everyone who is still in the running!  :goodluck

Ah. Then you're at the mercy of the publisher, so to speak, and SCBWI has no further control over what happens (or doesn't).

Several of you mentioned "checking in" or getting rejections, etc... Is there a particular person to do so with or a list of long/shortlisted somewhere or should we assume no news is good news? I haven't heard anything, but it's possible I suppose something went into SPAM and I didn't see it., but magazines are starting to look for October content, so while I'm happy to wait, also if I did miss a rejection I might want to send it elsewhere.

Hi Meredith,
I think many of us are wondering the same thing..."Did my rejection go to spam and I missed it?"
It seems that a few people have heard back about some details, but many have not heard a thing back and are are still wondering and waiting about the timeline...
We are all hoping the best!  GOOD LUCK for New Mexico!

Hey everyone,

I actually decided to email customer service at Macmillan just to ask if there is a timeline and I was told that I should check back with SCBWI because it is part of their submission process... I'm guessing this was just a customer service rep who may not have had the full picture, but oh well. Just thought I'd share.

The pandemic has delayed so many books, mine included, so it wouldn't surprise me if the book release date has been pushed back. I think that's more likely than a cancellation. You also never know what's going on with editors. A key person could have covid, a death in the family . . .

Hopefully it’s just a delay and I sure hope it’s not due to anybody’s personal troubles/tragedies. I just think the professional thing to do would be to let applicants know something, even if that something is that publication, and thus selection, has been delayed, instead of radio silence for more than six months. But that’s the publishing industry, I guess.

Ok, I emailed someone through McMillian and they forwarded my email to someone in charger of the book. This is what they said:

Hi, Natalie! I'm Rachel Murray of Godwin Books - it's so nice to e-meet you, and deepest apologies for the long delay in our response to your story for the Haunted States collection!

This year has been a bit of a whirlwind, and so it's taken us longer than we'd hoped to evaluate our wonderful submissions. We're still in the process of choosing the stories that will be featured in the collection (right now, our plan for publication is Spring 2023, in time for the Halloween season), but as soon as we're done, we'll notify each person whose work is selected. That will be before the end of the year.

Emailed the editor from the place doing the book and this is the response she gave me.

Apologies, we haven't been able to make all our selections just yet, but we're working away on Haunted States. We recently added a new person to the team, which should be a big help - I'm going to check in with her as soon as the office reopens, but I didn't want the year to end without word from us.

All my best,

From SCBWI Insight.....
Haunted States of America Update: Submissions Re-Open for Selected States

The anthology that SCBWI is preparing for publication by the Laura Godwin imprint at Henry Holt is finally underway. Your submissions have been read and submitted to the publisher, and just this week, we confirmed that the finalists for the first five states have been selected. The authors will be notified next week. If you have heard from us with a rejection notice, then your submission is no longer in contention. If you have not yet heard from us, it means that your submission is still under consideration. Please bear with us as we go through what has turned out to be a slower-than-normal process. All of publishing has been impeded by the pandemic, but we assure you that the project is moving forward.

A further announcement is that there are still several states that we would like to see additional submissions from Delaware, Mississippi, South Dakota, Washington DC, Indiana, West Virginia, Wyoming, Oregon, Alaska, Maryland, Missouri, and North Carolina. If you are affiliated with any of those states, and would like to submit a scary story set in one of them, your submission will be accepted until March 1.

To submit your short story for one of the states that we need more submissions from, please click HERE.  Please keep in mind that we are looking for contemporary stories that give a real sense of place.
Each story should have a 1,300 word limit, be intended for middle grade readers, and emphasize a specific locale within the state. As many locale details as possible will make your story stand out from the pack.

Expect to get regular updates on this project, and to hear from us if your story has been accepted.

Congrats to all those still in contention and the five writers chosen to date.  One more chance for those writers associated with the states mentioned in the post.

So, it’s taken more than a YEAR to pick five of fifty winners,  and the contest is being reopened in certain states after an embarrassingly long passage of time. And the only way we know this is by reading the SCBWI Insight. How about  the courtesy of a simple email updating contest applicants who have been waiting since last December? I’m impressed with the positive attitude so many of you have maintained during this entire process, I can’t say I feel the same.

Don't be too impressed. Some of us, like me, received rejections back in January, 2021. I understand your frustration though.

I didn't apply, but I do suspect they got way more entries than expected. Probably thousands from NY and other states with larger populations. It would have taken someone a long time to gather those emails and send individual updates. However, they could have put this in an earlier Bulletin or Insight, so I also understand your frustration. In any case, good luck to those still in the running.

Alison-
I think many of us feel the stress of waiting.
This has been a long wait.
It was good to hear something finally.
Perhaps five people will know  more next week.
 Hang in there!

Best to Everyone!

Hi there -- it would be awesome if people would post if they have been chosen or if they know which states have been notified. It was unclear if only a certain 5 states would hear this week. Thanks and best of luck!

Hello all! I agree, Megan, it would be great if anyone hears anything about being selected, if they can post it here! Also, Kenneth, could I ask what email address your rejection email came from? I'm terrified that I've missed a rejection somewhere in my junk/spam email. That would be so helpful to know - thank you!

I'm still waiting, too, and have wondered if a rejection could have gone to my junk mail (though I have checked!). I sure hope to hear, one way or the other, someday soon. Good luck to everyone still waiting!

My rejection letter came from the SCBWI webmaster from the email address :  info@scbwi.org

I hope this helps.

Sorry you didn't make it Tracé. Find somewhere else to submit it before there is a flood of these stories out there. I think magazines will be seeing a lot of rejected Haunted States stories in the coming months.

Well, I guess that means they've selected NY.

I'm probably the only one who counted up the states and realized that one was missing. Maine is AWOL. There are a lot of writers in my state (which is open), so I am thinking they're hunting for more diverse writers.

If I look at the article above and start counting from 36, I get to 50 plus Washington DC. Maine may have been selected already, but possibly they haven't notified the winner yet. You're right that it isn't in the winner's list. It could also be the person who typed this missed it. You could email and ask about it.

I have a couple questions about this contest, so I thought I'd ask here! The email today said no more than 500 words, but the submission link says 1300 words. Which one is correct?
Also, I have a spooky MG story that isn't based in specific legend or folklore, but takes place in the Natural History museum in  Washington, DC.  Anyone know if this would be ok to submit, since it's a story from my own imagination?
(*adding that I lived in DC for 5 years, so I definitely have a connection to the area)

Congratulations to all the winners!! I am excited to read these stories, and best of luck to anyone considering a new story for the remaining states. I'm curious: did everyone rejected get an email from the publisher saying so? It's strange; I didn't get any word but saw that my state was chosen and included in the official announcement. Best of luck to everyone and hope you're able to place your stories elsewhere.

My email says 1300 words.  For your other question, you'll have to look at the information on the website or ask whomever the contact is. Blueboard staff isn't involved with this.

Amaris-Castillo, I didn't see a rejection email, either. I do check my spam folder regularly, but in the 1 year+ that this went on, it is entirely possible that I missed it. But, yes, like you, I send my congrats to all the winners and best wishes to those looking to place their stories elsewhere.

Lauren, I saw in the Insight letter, they were saying 500 words. That surprised me, because in the original call (and in today's email) it said 1300. If  you are submitting for one of the remaining spots, I think it would be worthwhile to clarify, just to be sure. Good luck!

It's 1300 words. I would never bother a busy editor to ask a mundane question like, where's Maine😂. My thought this morning was that maybe they have so many entries for some states they're doing a separate book for those states. Wishful thinking, I know.

Thanks, Debbie. You’re right, the new email today confirmed 1300 words. There isn’t a listed contact anywhere though, just a link back to the general SCBWI help form which has been less than responsive for me. If anyone knows who I can contact, please let me know!

Lauren -- I would just submit it. The worst they can do is reject it. The guidelines say they have to be inspired by local events or myths, so if you can revise it to be related to something like that you probably have a better chance.

Please let me know if there is an update and/or a winner in North Carolina? Thank you

Hi Christine,

Unfortunately, the Blueboard staff has nothing to do with the contest. I know winners were announced for some states in a prior Insight, but they don't seem to have updated. Considering how long the first set took, I suspect they aren't done yet, but you'd have to email headquarters to find out for sure.

Good luck to you and everyone still waiting.

I know. It seems like a long time to me too, and it's sort of weird that after the flurry of activity in April it's been silent again, but I'm new to trade publishing and don't know if this is just what deadlines are like in this world. Given how long the first round took I'd let a little more time pass before submitting out. It's probably a little late for October magazine deadlines at this point, anyway. Maybe someone with more experience can offer advice on the etiquette of this situation?

In case you haven't seen this...

After a slow summer, we are once again moving forward on The Haunted States of America, a middle grade anthology of scary stories written by SCBWI members, to be published by Godwin Books, an imprint of Henry Holt Books for Young Readers. Summertime was a fallow period for publishing decisions, but as of today, an additional eight stories have been selected by the editorial team at Godwin Books for inclusion in the final book. Congratulations to the following SCBWI members whose stories have been accepted:

Pennsylvania: Giselle Anatol
Mississippi: Jennifer Dillard
Maine: Lisa Fraustino
Maryland: Deborah Schaumberg
Hawaii: Keiko Adams
Delaware: Daniel Barlekamp
Washington DC: Joanne Beaucaire
Alaska: Chris Eboch

There remain nine states where the final story selection has yet to be made. They are NC, SD, TN, WV, WY, CT, IN, NM, and OR. SCBWI has turned in its nominations, and the editors at Godwin Books are expected to make their final decisions soon. We are hopeful that all selections will be made by the next edition of Insight.

* SCBWI has turned in its nominations?
