I've written a book that doesn't fall into typical age categories.  Its overall subject is loss and connection.  It is a detailed story which would hold the attention of older children (and adults) but it also has beautiful illustrations which makes it accessible to younger children as well.  I am self-publishing.   Looking for advice on how to position book in catalogs, online, etc.

This is a genre. For a possible comparative book to research, I suggest you start with the work of  Shaun Tan.

Sherri and I think you'll find many of us enjoying PB for the older reader. Shaun Tan is a great example. You might want to mention visual literacy as a thing for PBs for older children because they aren't just for little kids. What about comparing it to something classic like Blueberries for Sal? I love nonfiction and a lot of those are geared towards the older reader. I'm thinking of Countdown, One Giant Step--my brain is on space exploration.

I just thought I'd add to this thread, as encouragement, that the big children's book awards in Australia have two picture book categories - one for young readers, and one for general readers. How good is that?!

Julie, that's great news about the awards. So often children's is the only category and it's the most diverse of all. And yay for an insect beating a mammal or bird! I will forever remember JBS Haldane's comment on the mind of God, "an inordinate fondness for beetles."
