Hey everyone,

My picture book manuscript about a girl with autism who is trying to understand the world before her diagnosis called 'Sally Doesn't Understand" is not something I am finding an agent for.  Does anyone have any ideas for a literary agent who looks at picture books and wants stories about children with learning disabilities?   The smaller publishers keep telling me 'They can't do it at this time due to high submission rates, but to try and send it again at a later date.'  I am hoping being able to have a larger publisher look at it will lead to publication.

A professional editor has already gone over this story FYI

Thanks for reading everyone, and if you are unsure don't worry about it

Anna, have you tried going to #MSWL on Twitter?  Or the Manuscript Wishlist website: https://www.manuscriptwishlist.com/
Maybe you can do a search for learning disability or autism.

Jen Malia published a PB called TOO STICKY with Albert Whitman last year. It's about a girl with autism. She's represented by Naomi Davis at BookEnds.

Best of luck!

I think most agents would want to book to be #ownvoices, but this falls into the diversity category, so most will look at it if it is #ownvoices.

It is a #ownvoices story...I based it on my life as a kid with autism

Have you looked into Magination Press, an imprint of the American Psychological Association?

Than anyone who says they are looking for diversity should be a possible target. Good luck.

I would also say, if this is the first (or second or third) PB you have completed writing, then write your next book. You could also have a character with autism in your next completed manuscript...and the next...and the next. Basically, keep writing and submitting. Don't put all your hopes into this one manuscript.

From what I understand, Magination Press typically accepts unsolicited manuscripts. However, they currently aren't accepting anything until summer 2021. I would recommend checking back with them this summer.

Thanks for the advice, and I am working on that too... But the 'Sally' story is the only one that a professional editor has looked at...I can't really get an editor for the other stories due to lack of funds :(

I have also had a rough time finding beta readers willing to read a picture book manuscript without any art.

Anna, have you tried posting in the critique threads of people looking for other PB writers?
Here's the link: https://www.scbwi.org/boards/index.php?board=127.0
Most people read for each other without pictures. Good luck!

Your subject asks for agent recommendations, so I'm just throwing into the ring that if you have already begun submitting this ms to publishers then an agent will be less likely to take it on because it has been "shopped". Apologies if I have misunderstood your situation.
