Question about the 32 Page Standard

I'm working on a couple manuscripts that I plan on eventually self-publishing. I know that 32 pages is the typical standard for PB, but I'm seeing some mixed information in my research...

Does the 32-page standard usually only include the story itself, or does it also include the title page, copyright page, etc? From the PBs that I have read and researched, I'm seeing a mix?

Thanks in advance!

https://taralazar.com/2009/02/22/picture-book-construction-know-your-layout/ is a good reference.

What kind of variance are you seeing? There are shorter and longer PBs, but those are more rare.

I guess there really hasn't been any significant variance - plus or minus a few pages.

Thank you for that helpful resource!

I'm never sure how people count pages because sometimes there are extra pages. Maybe it has to do with binding. But yes, when I make a dummy, I always leave pages for copyright/title pages. I self-published a photo PB (Midnight and Baby Max) and it's 42 pages--I think the way printing is done now, it doesn't have to be a multiple of 4. And it was lovely being able to have the book exactly the length it needed to be :grin3

Here's another helpful article on PB page counts/templates: https://www.inkygirl.com/inkygirl-main/2015/11/4/free-picture-book-thumbnail-templates-for-writers-and-illust.html  Good luck!

The 32 pages is 32 physical pages (if you count both sides of the page). It's because the book is made in signatures, which are giant sheets of paper that are folded, bound, and cut, and the number of folds you can reasonably make at a time turn out to be 16 pages (8 papers front and back). Since a story is usually longer than that, they bind two signatures together, which comes out to 32 pages/16 papers front and back. There is of course some flexibility on how you use those pages--do you want artwork to start early? Include the endpapers? (That's the inside of the front and back covers.) Do you want to take your time getting into the book? You need a title page and somewhere to put your copyright, so you'll need to figure that in. But the rest is however the artist wants to lay out the art/story within that physical constraint.

For print books in traditional publishing, I believe the number of pages must be divisible evenly by four. But digital processes have changed some of this. An ebook can certainly be any length. Consider that 28 pages are usually used for story in a 32-page book, though some do have the story start with the title on the front cover. I've also seen books where the copyright info is on the back cover. (It may be all of these have board books.)

I love PBs that begin before the title page even, like the set up. Tammi's Caring for Your Lion is like that. You can see that with the look inside feature of Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Caring-Your-Lion-Tammi-Sauer/dp/1454916095?asin=1454916095&revisionId=&format=4&depth=1

Hello Victor

Amazon's KDP print on demand (POD) requires a minimum of 24 pages, (in most cases) but does not require additional pages to follow multiples of 8.  Total page count varies by the dimensions of your book, but most book sizes allow for well over 500 pages-  quite a few more than a picture book should be.
