Technically, Edward would need help killing himself, so maybe Jacob and Edward fight to the death. Jacob "wins" because Edward no longer has anything to live for, but the victory is meaningless. Jacob wanders as a lone wolf for the rest of his days, haunting the spot where he once held Bella in his arms...

Wow, I like it!  But then I'm a sucker for sad endings.  I don't think the teen fans would like it though.  I can see it now--girl fans of Edward protesting outside the doors of Little, Brown publishers and Writers House demanding to bring Edward back to life.  T-shirts with We Want Edward Back!  are best sellers.  And girls crying everywhere.  Oh, where is the justice in it all?

I'm not being serious in my musings. I'm just wondering aloud where Meyer will lead everyone at the end since she's utilizing the tragic-classics as a guide. If she uses Sense & Sensibility, Bella might end up with human Mike who silently pined for her all along instead of Edward or Jacob, depending on which sister's story you go with. Now all the fans would definately hate that! I would, too!

I've only just started reading Eclipse (just finished New Moon) and if we're rewriting endings can I pretty please have Bella in a love triangle with Edward and Carlisle?

Instead of Jacob? Maybe Jacob can have the vampire Esme or something...

Jengt and I were discussing this in the "New Moon" thread and we both conquer that Carlisle is very intriguing. Plus it would throw Edward into turmoil because he loves Carlisle.

Any takers?

Ooh, I like that!  Carlisle sounds intriguing to me too.  I seriously don't think Jacob and Bella could really happen.  He's one of my favorite characters but I didn't like him in Eclipse.  But maybe there's hope for him.  But please don't imprint on a two-year-old.  That was a little too creepy for me to stomach.

Yeah, that imprinting on a two-year-old thing was a little odd to me.

I loved C.C.'s idea of replacing Jacob with Carlise. The tension and conflict would be AMAZING!!

Uh huh. Exactly. I have great affection for Carlisle. I'm only halfway through Eclipse but I can't help but to think that Carlisle seems so much more, I don't know, manly or something. Of course I'm an adult and not the intended audience for the book, but everytime Edward keeps wanting Bella to still be human and whatnot I keep thinking, you've got the wrong vampire, honey, I bet Carlisle will bite you!

The moment Carlise said he'd bite Bella if that's what she wanted, I was like YES!! Then there would always be a connection between Bella and Carlise, a special bond Edward could never have.

Of course, this is wishful thinking. Edward will probably bite Bella.

And Esme? I never did like her character. She seems TOO old compared to Carlise. I don't know why.

Agreed. The thing that annoyed me the most was that Esme was changed after Edward. So Edward is "older" than Esme, which, one would assume, would give him more of a dominant or superior position in the family, yet I never once felt that. Esme and Edward act like mother and son toward each other in the book, when really, in human years, she's only 26 and Edward 17. It just doesn't seem plausible, the roles they've taken. Or maybe it's just me!

Edited to add: I just realized (maybe I'd forgotten?) that Carlise is over 350 years old! Tell me that isn't hot!

Piping up to say that I like Esme.

She's a good mother figure for Bella because Bella's mom is not really a mother figure - Bella always had to take care of her. Esme is also a good mother figure for Edward partially because she's with Carlisle, but mostly because she's more mature than Edward. It seems like Esme had a larger and less cardboardy role in the other books.

I do really like Carlisle, and I kind-of want him to bite Bella (only because Edward and his opinion on it are really starting to bug me).

I still want Carlisle to stay with Esme.

Just finished reading Eclipse.  Never read the two books before it, but I found I didn't need to....

I enjoyed it, and I wanted to finish it.  The ending left me wondering if there'd be a book IV.  I also wondered if I'd bother to read it.  I'm not sure...  I might.  I did enjoy the story, but it wasn't the end all be all like some other books have been for me.

Okay, I finally finished Eclipse the other night (does that tell you anything???)!!! I've been dying to read all your responses!
Here are my thoughts:
1) Since it took me so long to read, I felt it was very slow and drawn out (but I still liked it). 15 YO daughter loved it but said that it was unsatisfying.
2) I am so in love with Edward... I even had some cool dreams, not sexual, but comforting. (Did someone say there are 'I heart Edward' t-shirts? How cool is that?!)
3) Well, I don't know if this has been mentioned before but here it goes... Can Edward have sex???? Can he reproduce??? Does Bella want to have children??? AND one question that concerns me... Does Bella have a period???? and What about that????

Anyone??? Any thoughts????

Edward can have sex (he's got plenty of blood), but I highly doubt he can reproduce.

I also wondered about Bella's periods. We hear so much about her other bathroom habits, what gives, right? I'd guess by now that Edward is desensitized to her blood, it wouldn't matter. Maybe Meyer did mention it because it gives the illusion to Bella being more "pure" and less driven by animal instinct, like Edward. You know, to highlight their differences.

BTW, everyone, I bought Wicked Lovely for my 15 YO daughter and I since everyone has said to read it if you like Twilight. She read the entire novel after school yesterday, even taking time to go to Homecoming Games at school last night. She couldn't put it down!!!

I finished reading Eclipse this weekend (and Wicked Lovely, too)

I thought some scene were too drawn out, like the 3 wives tale (reminded me of the historical backstory babble in The Historian). The Jacob b'friend-love thing? Ick - why? If it becomes a true love triangle it seems forced.

Overall, I enjoyed it, not as much as the other two. The end left me feeling a little strung along because none of the big Its happened. She didn't become a vampire, they didn't get engaged or married and it ws the same - Bella agreed to do thing because she felt like she had to.

One weird thought (probably because of the imprinting): I wonder if Edward has enchanted Bella - he admits to not playing fair in that scene w/ Jacob. And we know how Bella MUST have Edward in her life...it's so extreme, it makes me wonder :

I just finished this book and liked the other two a lot better.

I LIKED the teen angst SM protrays in Bella as she tries to keep her friend (Jake) and her bf from killing each other.  I LOVE the descriptions of the characters -- I can FEEL Edward's rock hard, cold body and Jake's hot one.  (Woo hoo!)  And the way Bella struggles with her own emotions and choices about what she wants for the future.

I DIDN'T like the chapter of Jasper rambling.  Skipped it.  Also skipped the chapter of the wolf history.  Also skimmed the COMPLETELY UNREALISTIC convo between Jake and Ed in the tent.  PLEASE!  Also didn't believe that Bella wouldn't want to marry Ed.  She is SO obsessed with him, I thought she'd want it for SURE!  What gives?  Just b/c she thinks it'd make her trashy or something?  Whatever.

I liked the last chap and the epilogue a lot -- and I did finish the book b/c I wanted to know what was gonna happen to the characters, but I wish these authors who make tons of $ don't get to ramble on in their books unnecessarily just b/c some readers want to stay in the world they created for as long as possible.  (I believe that's why they can get away with it, like all the info dumping passages in HP7 -- please don't lynch me. )  I think readers should be forced to re-read such books, not slog through one super-long reading that makes the story less potent.

That said, I'll certainly at least skim through the next one b/c I'm invested in the characters, and I do think it'd be REALLY good if Bella became a vamp and we saw her dealing with being a newborn.  That'd be great.
