I was in our town's citizens' police academy a few years ago. Here if you're in the back seat, you're not getting out until they open it for you. (If there are handles, they're not operational, but I don't remember if they're there.)

Thanks for answering. The YouTube videos don't seem to address this. So I was wondering -- does the police officer in the front seat have to actually get out of the car to open the rear door? Or can he or she just "release" it? If giving people a ride (people who are not potential criminals ), does he or she have to actually get out of the car and open the door like an old-fashioned guy on a date?
I'm old enough that I remember those dates... :o)
I know that some police officers use their cars when they are off-duty. In my novel, the situation is one where he has to pick up the other members of the family on the way home from work and gets in a fight with the teenager, who can't slam out of the car but has to wait for her stepfather to LET her out so it's a big of a frustrating moment (humorous for the reader).
