Title: 2019 Writing with the Stars information now online (free PB mentor contest)
Post by: Becky on December 04, 2018, 06:15 AM
Hi everyone!

The 2019 Writing with the Stars mentor lineup is now LIVE at: http://beckytarabooks.com/wwts-contest/

This is an amazing opportunity for aspiring picture book authors and illustrators to win a free 3-month mentorship from enthusiastic, talented, multi-published mentors who CAN'T WAIT to provide guidance and support to their lucky mentees! The official application window is January 9-13, but if you are interested in applying, definitely start researching and working on your applications now--there is LOTS of competition for these spots!

Writing with the Stars was created by Tara Luebbe (author of picture books SHARK NATE-O, I AM FAMOUS, and the upcoming I USED TO BE FAMOUS and CONAN THE LIBRARIAN) and is now in its third year. GOOD LUCK to all who apply!

I'm thinking of entering this contest.  What does anyone who participated in this contest think of it.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I encouraged a friend to enter last year and he won a spot with Pam Calvert,  a gifted PB writer, freelance editor, and member of this community. He told me he grew tremendously and had a fantastic experience! ✨📚

If you win a spot it would require a commitment of time and energy over the three month period, but the trade-off is an opportunity to learn from incredibly talented mentors—I hope you’ll give it a try!

Best wishes!

I definitely think this is a great program to apply to. In my network of writer friends, I know several of the mentors and several of the people who made it in and have not heard one bad thing about it. In fact, I met Stacy McNulty, the inspiration for this mentorship by Tara, a few years ago and she was one of the kindest, most supporting writers I have met. She gave a free mentorship a few years back and her only "ask" was that the person who won it at some point pass it on. So that is what Tara has done, many times over. I love the spirit of this contest and if I weren't agented I would apply in a heart beat.

Good luck!

A lot of good writers (and illustrators) to select from as potential mentors. I'm excited to apply! Thanks for sharing.

Yes, it is an amazing opportunity for those who are chosen! A few of the past winners have gone on to sign with agents and/or editors, although the number one goal, of course, is to strengthen your writing. There is great information behind each of the star-studded doors, but be sure to check out all of the interviews on Tara's blog http://beckytarabooks.com/blog/, as well. All of this information is very helpful when applying! GOOD LUCK, everyone!

The word doc to download lists a word-limit for some of the specific questions (but others do not).

For the work sample, the link for the Official Rules opens to a PDF that lists word limits of 800 (fiction) or 1000 (non-fiction).
