Title: What Books for a 15 yr old girl?
Post by: Bernell Spicer on December 13, 2009, 10:21 AM
Wow!!!  What an impressive list of titles!

This may be the wrong place for this question (mods, please move if so), but what would you recommend for a 15-year-old girl who loves Edgar Allan Poe (and is a bit on the angsty, depressive end of the personality spectrum), is still into Harry Potter and Twilight (although pretends not to be), loves theater (has progressed from seeing Wicked 5 times to thinking  it's over-rated.)  She is body shy, not heavy into boys yet. Any thoughts on a good BBer read for her?

I don't know if this author is a Blue Boarder or not, but your query made me think of her book immediately. It's a book that will be published this fall called Nevermore by Kelly Creagh. I found out about it when Fuse #8 did her librarian preview of Simon and Schuster's fall list. (So haven't read it and can't personally recommend it, but the fact that the boy character is into Poe and it was described as "the thinking girl's Twilight" made me think it might be a good fit for you.) I realize this suggestion may not be useful since it's not out yet, but thought I'd throw it out to keep in mind for the future.

The love of theater makes me think Dramarama by E. Lockhart. I was a bit of a theater nerd in HS and is feels very authentic to me. While she's reading Lockhart, Frankie Landau Banks is also awesome.

Thanks for the suggestions. Her birthday is next week and I see some books in her future.

I really liked A.S. King's THE DUST OF 100 DOGS - very well written and the story was excellent.

I also recently enjoyed BEFORE I FALL by Lauren Oliver and CRACKED UP TO BE by Courtney Summers.  Both don't fit with what you said, necessarily, but I enjoyed em.

Ironically, my 15 year old daughter is reading adult books and I am reading books she should be reading. :lol2  Many parents might think this irresponsible of me, but this child has read EVERYTHING. Plus, she's a smart and mature girl. Anyhow, if you are looking for something you do not have to screen, check out DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS, by C. Omololu. I loved it! There are just too many to list! :flower Good luck!

I guess you don't notice things like that when you are on tons of cold medicine and you just started visiting the blueboards again.  :lol2 Thanks.  :smile

I know I'm jumping on the bandwagon sort of late, but I had to second this!  The axis of the book IS Edgar Allan Poe.  The author of NEVERMORE, Kelly Creagh, is actually from my hometown and I read an article about her in the newspaper and picked up the book on a whim the next day . . . let's just say I'm glad there will be a sequel.  :)
