I just finished the first book in the HIGH CROWN CHRONICLES by Jodi Gallegos (she used to visit here -- she's MamaG). It was so much fun to read a fantasy reminiscent of Tamora Pierce's Alanna series with a strong heroine making her way in a very patriarchal world. I also saw hints of GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS here too, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Allondale with Malory and Jamis. I thought Jodi did a great job resolving some of the issues while also leaving plenty for the next book -- and I already can't wait for read the next one! Anyone else read this? (It just came out, and I know if it in part because Jodi is one of my crit partners from way back.)

I haven't been the boards for a while and I stumbled upon your post. I will have to get a copy to read. It's always fun to read a book that you've seen early drafts of!

Thanks for the recommendation, Robin! I admit that now that I can't casually browse my library's bookshelves, it especially helps to hear of recommendations from friends.

Elaine, I actually read a version pretty similar to what is published (with a few additions), so I really enjoyed seeing how it had been tightened and really shined. :)

Rose, although it doesn't have magic, if you like fantasy (and liked Girl of Fire and Thorns, in particular), I suspect you'll like it.

Barb, it's a very fun read!
