There is some overlap between chapter books and lower MG, so please bear with me.

Mercy Pig series by Kate diCamillo (actually anything she writes is golden, from Edward Tulane to her latest trio of Raymie Nightingale+friends)
Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park
Catwings by Ursula LeGuin
Warriors series by Erin Hunter
Ramona series by Beverly Cleary
One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
Sideways Stories by Louis Sachar
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson

There are lots more titles, and don't forget nonfiction! Happy reading!

Thanks, Vijaya! I'll check them out, and I'll definitely search for nonfiction.

Interesting list. My library has the Warriors book in YA as well as middle grade. I don't think they qualify as lower. And I always thought Junie B Jones was a chapter book classic. So hard to figure out the overlaps.

Maniac Macgee by Jerry Spinelli and Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate might qualify as lower MG. My son loved Secrets of Droon (the whole series). Tales of a Fourth grade Nothing and many of the other Judy Blume classics would be lower MG as well.

Debbie, thanks for your suggestions. I love Katherine Applegate's work.

Trine, I haven't read Hello, Universe yet but will add it to my list.

Me too. And Wonder. I see they've made a movie but I've not watched it yet.

I just picked up a DARLING book by Marion Dane Bauer--Little Cat's Luck.  Free verse. I stayed up last night to finish it. :cat
Raymie Nightingale, Louisiana's Way Home, Beverly trilogy of books is also so great. I can't believe how beautifully Kate diCamillo writes about difficult subjects like abandonment and loss and for such young ones.

Zeno Alexander's The Library of Ever. Light, whimsical, and totally implausible, but lots of fun.
