Post by: Schriscoe on February 26, 2018, 05:58 AM
Any recommendations are much appreciated. I am looking for adventure themed PBs.

Thank you!

What a good question, Sharon!

By contemporary standards, it may be more of a picture storybook (?), but how about The Tales of Winnie-the-Pooh?

I'm also a fan of Faith Ringgold's Aunt Harriet's Underground Railroad in the Sky (children fly with Harriet Tubman, reliving her journey on the Underground Railroad; as I teacher, I used this to introduce my tenth graders to the story of Moses).

I'm eager to hear what others say because just coming up with two examples was challenging for me!!

Edited to add another:  The Runaway Bunny by Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd  :bunny2

I love Runaway Bunny too!

But for real adventures: Curious George. For something more contemp. Salina's Penguin books. Both these characters have a great sense of joy when they explore.

For older kids, Tin-Tin.

I second the Curious George books, and then there's The Berstein Bears.

Yep, I second the Aaron Becker trilogy:

- Journey
- Quest
- Return

Other magical adventure-themed PBs (my favourites tend to be wordless) :

- The Only Child by Guojing
- The Garden of Abdul Gasazi by Chris Van Allsburg
-  And pretty much anything by Chris Van Allsburg like Polar Express, Jumanji etc.

And if you're up for a graphic novel, I highly recommend:

- Around the World by Matt Phelan

Are We There Yet? by Alison Lester is a graphic novel-style picture book about a family who spends a year traveling all around Australia. It has wonderful pictures, and really makes me want to see Australia!

The Runaway Bunny catches my heart--it was featured heavily in a Korean drama I watched recently called Mother, about a teacher who goes on the run with a little girl in her class who is being abused at home (thus saving her life). As they are running, they frequently read this book. The drama won a nomination at Cannes recently for best international series. I will never be able to read the book the same again.
