I know the differing pitch parties have different rules- but what is the standard time you can take to submit after the event?

There are no hard and fast rules, but the assumption is that the story you are pitching is submission ready. So yes, you can take a day or two or three to review and polish as you always want to submit your best possible work, but waiting too long may or may not look odd.

BUT, don't feel any obligation to submit to everyone who "likes" your story. DO YOUR RESEARCH. If the agent or editor doesn't seem like a good fit, don't submit. On many of the pitch parties (I cohost #PBPitch) sometimes you get agent or editors who don't feel "right." A few times a vanity publisher or two hearted a bunch.

I think your good from immediately until about a month unless the agent or editor states otherwise, and sometimes they do have this info in their Twitter bios or web guidelines. Keep in mind that an agent who is open to general submissions all the time may not mind a longer wait but another may shut down before you get your pitch out if you wait too long.

Agree completely, DO be careful and research every Agent and Editor/Publisher that "hearts" your Twitter Pitch. Just saw a new (to me at least) Vanity/Author services company liking SO many pitches on the one held just this week and lots of writers thanking them and saying they are sending their sub to them now, or just sent it, etc.

I had the luck of getting a like on my pitch from an agent at the same agency as another agent whom I'd already queried and awaiting response. I can't send the material to the agent who requested it until the other one passes. Ugh. I swear this kinda dumb stuff only happens to me.  C'est la vie.

At least, you can still submit. Some agencies say a "no" from one is a no from all. Hopefully the first will love it and the rest will become irrelevant.

This information about pitch parties  is AMAZING! I have several picture books and a middle grade fantasy novel I've been submitting to publishers that accept unsolicited manuscripts, and it has been a slow and frustrating process. This opens the doors (no, floodgates!) to exciting possibilities. I just joined Twitter. I definitely need to figure out how pitch parties work. THANK YOU EVERYONE!

Hi writers! In reading this thread and doing some google follow-up I learned what pitch wars are! Unfortunately I just missed the one for picture books but I see #pitmad is coming up. Does anyone have experience or advice re: #pitmad for a picture book writer? Thanks in advance

One thing I'd recommend is doing a lot of research on anyone who likes your tweet. Not every agent or editor participating is what you would call legitimate. Some are just random people who decided to become an agent even though they have no connections or sales history. There was a bit of drama after the last event when one kidlit agent called out another for her unprofessional work.

My personal experience is that the majority of likes I got were from newbie agents and overseas agents. I'm not entirely sure why UK agents participate in pitch contests when the majority of writers seem to be from North America (correct me if I'm wrong, of course). I've submitted to them for them for hoots and giggles. So far, I haven't received a reply from any of the Latinx or Pitmad requests I've gotten. I'm wondering about others.

I do Twitter pitch contests as a lark. It's fun to see what others post. And maybe someday I'll have good luck with it. Go in with no expectations and see what happens.

I'm not American, so I've never thought about it that way. I know a bunch of Australians and Asians who got their agents from the pitch events.
