I'm working on a PB draft where the narrator speaks directly to the audience but also to the character in the book. I don't think I've ever seen this done and am wondering if I'm nuts for trying it. Any thoughts?

Julie is right. There are many first person examples.

I love the ones that use this technique for humor.
THE MONSTER AT THE END OF THIS BOOK is a classic example.
Jan Thomas has some great ones like, ARE YOU READY FOR FUN?
I can't think of any off the top of my head where the narrator does this but is not also an illustrated character in the book...

Just read HERE COMES VALENTINE CAT, by Deborah Underwood, where the narrator talks to Cat and the reader listens in on the conversation.

I believe Julie Falatko's PB, Snappsy, the Alligator (Did Not Ask to Be In This Book) does this, too. Which reminds me I need to order this one! It's on my Feb. list

****Utterly Shameless Plug Alert****
my PB Whose Story Is This, Anyway? is based on that premise.
So I say, go for it, take off running and see where it leads! You're not nuts...unless we both are.

Oh I've been meaning to check out Snapsy and I'll look into the rest of these as well. Thank you! (And I love the *shameless plug alert* - please, if I EVER get a PB published I will be "plugging" from the mountain tops! Congrats on your book!)
