Picture Books (PB) / Re: What is meant by "Query letters not accepted"?

Without having read exactly what was stated, I think they probably mean they don't want ONLY query letters, with no pages. I would include a letter with the manuscript.

Picture Books (PB) / What is meant by "Query letters not accepted"?
« Last post by Anthony Casale on May 18, 2022, 07:08 AM »
I am a new, non-agented writer with a PB manuscript that I think is finally ready to send out. I've been combing through the list of publishers in The Book and have noticed that a few publishers that accept unsolicited manuscripts also note that they don't accept query letters (e.g. Charlesbridge, Holiday House).

My question is: do I send them anything that serves a similar purpose (introduces me and/or my book), or is it literally just my manuscript and that's all?

Picture Books (PB) / Re: 2022 Submissions for picture Books

Agree with Debbie. Keep looking. There are certainly agents who take on PB authors who aren't also illustrators. The pbpitch website (www.pbpitch.com) has a list of picture book agents - actually, it's probably a bit outdated, I need to do some updates, but it's a good place to start. In addition, google "Monster list of picture book agents" or something like that. That list might be more up-to-date than the PBPitch one. The MSWL website (manuscript wish list) and corresponding Twitter hash tag might be helpful as well.

PBPitch is coming up on 6/9 if you are on Twitter. Agents and editors (of mostly small houses) stop by and heart pitches. They are selective, but we do get success stories every time. :-)

Best of luck!

There are also a few publishers, like Chronicle Books, that accept unagented submissions.  You can submit your manuscript directly to them.

Keep looking. Keep checking back on agents you've looked at. Follow some on Twitter. Attend programs (if you can afford to), like some conferences and workshops, that may help you bypass the usual submission guidelines. 12 x 12 is a good one.

Also note that agents prefer an author to have three books ready to submit. This shows them you won't be a one-hit wonder. You can also look into small presses tht don't require an agent for submission. Good luck.

Picture Books (PB) / 2022 Submissions for picture Books
« Last post by shannon-polson on May 17, 2022, 03:58 PM »
Hi, I have a picture book I was hoping to start to shop around to agents, but as I started to look into it, several noted they were only accepting submissions from authors who also illustrated their own books, and there were mentions of the tricky PB market right now. Does anyone have any advice or ideas? Thanks!

Renee, sending out books to reviewers is different than manuscript exchanges for stories that are a work-in-progress. You can make a request here to exchange mss or form a new group: https://www.scbwi.org/boards/index.php?board=127.0 or post your story (limit 1000 words) here: https://www.scbwi.org/boards/index.php?board=121.0  Happy writing and critiquing!

Hi there! I also have a manuscript and would be happy to do a peer review exchange of our books!
