Would I need to seek permission from a publisher if a book/cover is part of a picture that is being included in my picture book? Context: I am self-publishing using altered digital images. One image shows the cover of a published picture book on someone's lap (the character is reading the book).

I'm not sure about the picture book publisher (probably not, but please verify) but who owns the copyrights on the digital images you altered?
-
Verify, meaning contact the publisher to ask the question?
The digital images are my own.

I was thinking the ask a lawyer board.
