I'm doing a "Gross Story Time" next week for ages 3-5
After being surrounded around preschoolers you realize that germs are pretty much manifested by toddlers and pre-schoolers 
I'm excited about doing this story time to teach about germs and hand washing but I'm having trouble finding a germ book that I love besides SICK SIMON (which is my favorite between the gross illustrations and the story it really nails the point I want to get across)  and BEAR FEELS SICK
Do you have any other suggestions?  I found DO NOT LICK THIS BOOK (It's full of germs), which the title I was drawn to but I did not like the interactive "touch the book, touch your teeth, now touch (next object)"  That is the opposite of what I want the kids to do.

Germs by Ross Collins is a picture book I loved reading to my littles. (What's unique is that it's written from the germ's point-of-view!)

As a microbiologist, I hate the focus on germs, but there is one book I love that is perfect for this age group: Tiny Creatures by Nicola Davies  How I wish *I* had written it. It's brilliant.

Thank you for you book suggestion I will have to find that one.   I have to ask why do you hate the focus on germs?

Fawn, I dislike the way the emphasis is always on how terrible microbes are, instead of bringing the wonder of this microscopic world to kids. Only a fraction of microbes cause disease, the rest are very important for your health and well-being! Perhaps I need to write that book

I think you should.  I know there is good microbes (probiotics, yogurt, ect) and I do know that immune systems need to be build but how sickness runs through schools is crazy, and having my own 2 kids, I can kids are gross! LOL I've caught my daughter when she was just over a year or going on 2 chewing her shoe after a trip to the store (How do I insert that green face sick emoji here?)

Claire Eamer wrote a book for ages 8 - 11, "Inside Your Insides: A Guide to the Microbes That Call You Home." I wish I had paid closer attention when I read it, but ages 3 - 5 are more my sweet spot.

Fawn, finding a baby chewing on a shoe that goes in public *is* gross. I get it. I used to visit a friend in the hospital who was on dialysis and the minute we got home, I'd strip the pants and long-sleeved tees off them. Hospital bugs are the WORST. But we used to brush off the dirt from the carrots in our garden and eat them. My kids didn't really get sick until they started school; they'd catch a cold once a year or so. But that first year in school was tough--my son seemed to get a cold once a month.

Carrots, I wrote a counting book with bacteria but the editors who looked at it were all grossed out by the thought of bacteria. Maybe that should be a sequel after I extoll the role of microbes in fermentation   We brew our own kombucha and I make my own kimchi. Delish!!!

Scritch Scratch by Miriam Mois is an awesome story about a class/teacher with head lice. (contagious pest, romance, humor, what more could you ask for?)

Vijaya, I'm with you when it comes to our often over the top war against any/all germs and bacteria! For the life of me I'll never understand what the deal is with lysol and their insistence on making toilet bowls 99% germ free (for the 10 min till it's used again) Do people use toilet water for something I don't know about ?

Fawn, there's a book called "Achoo! The Most Interesting Book You'll Ever Read about Germs", by Trudee Romanek (Publisher Kids Can) that has been in popular for years. Now, not sure if it's a bit old for the age range you will be reading to?

LOL!  War of the Worlds was won by small microbs!

Germophobia may be slowly killing us. There's some evidence that immune systems with nothing to work on decide to work on their hosts, thus the slew of autoimmune diseases. Let them eat dirt.
