I think Fancy Nancy speaks to the reader. It popped into my head when I read this post, but I have all boys and have only read one of the FN books quite a long time ago.

CHESTER by Mélanie Watt

Actually, both Chester and Mélanie fight for control of the book. It's lovely.

I was going to chime in, but all the ones that instantly popped into my head were mentioned.  I'll have to dig around and see if I can come up with some more. Ever since I was a child, I've loved books that talk to the reader.  In fact, the first book that hit me was The Monster at the End of This Book because I wore those pages so thin, and it always stuck with me as I grew up.  I loved buying a fresh new copy to share with my daughters (who also love that book).

My own pb No Bears does this. It came out in the US earlier this year so should be around in libraries etc. When I realised I was going to use direct address I did just what you're doing - reading around to see how others had handled it. The pigeon books are my favourite!

The MC from THIS IS NOT MY HAT speaks directly to the reader. The book is from the same author who wrote I WANT MY HAT BACK.
