BETWEEN SHADES OF GREY by Ruta Sepetys
In 1941, Lena's family is taken from Lithuania by Soviet guards and deported to Siberia where she, her younger brother, and her mother struggle to survive amongst disease and starvation, all the while hoping to see her father again. Wow. This amazing book taught me so many scary facts about Stalin's Soviet leadership when so much if it is overshadowed by Hitler and the Holocaust. The writing is beautiful, the voice is real, and the story is heroic -- even more so when you read the author's note and learn about the author's family. I blinked back tears for the last 30 pages. Highly recommended historical YA novel.
