Laptop is a MacBook, TV is a plasma TV.

Object is to view footage DH shot with a digital video camera someone gave him. He uploaded it successfully to my old MacBook, now wants to see how it looks on the big screen.

You need an HDMI cable. Once it's connected, you need to change the "input" on your tv to the hdmi port. (There's usually a button on the remote labelled "input.") Be careful, though. Most modern tvs have more than one hdmi port, so you have to choose the correct one.

I have a MacBook, too. I use an HDMI cable but I had to get a special adapter thingie to attach to the end of it so that it would fit into my HDMI port on my Mac (which is smaller).

(I assume your tv has an HDMI port?)

Here's a guide in case you run into any issues (with links to what the needed cables/adapters look like) http://hdmiguru.hubpages.com/hub/connect-Macbook-to-TV-HDMI

Basically, if your Macbook has a Thunderbolt port, you'll need an HDMI cable plus one of these: http://www.amazon.com/BlueRigger-Premium-DisplayPort-Female-Adaptor/dp/B005QRA5IY/ OR just one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Displayport-Supports-HDMI-Enabled-Devices/dp/B00E965AUQ/
