Birds can't technically kiss because they don't have lips, but would you accept that verb in a picture book? Or do you prefer seeing a peck or a nibble or some other similar sign of affection?

Definitely. Kiss also means a slight touch -- the breeze kissed her cheek.

I think peck is cute, as it also means something birds do with their beaks. But I also think kiss is fine. I think I have used both in my chicken books.

If people can give a peck on the cheek, then birds can give a kiss!

There's a pair of crows I sometimes feed. I see them sitting on a wire across the street. These two definitely love each other. The little one often smooths and tweaks the feathers of the big one, especially around the neck. It's very sweet to see.

Yes. Owls do this in their courtship rituals.

Birds do have their own way of kissing, yes
They also preen one another which is what Betsy might be seeing with her crows when they nibble at one another's neck feathers. Birds cannot reach behind their necks, so they love to be scritched back there. This is due to having brand new feathers that come in and they itch terribly.
I love birds. I've owned them all my life (mostly cockatiels). They may not have lips or arms, but they truly do have some very unique ways of showing you they care.
