Holy sleepless night, I'm three fourths of the way through Peter Heller's debut novel The Dog Stars, which hit bookstores yesterday. If you couldn't abide The Road, don't bother (copy editors who see red at every sentence fragment are particularly in danger), but this post-apocalyptic novel has a sort of Hemingwayesque Nick Adams PSTD feel to it and I'm finding it mesmerizing.

THE EYRE AFFAIR by Jasper Fforde, very funny and off-the-wall.

CRANFORD by Elizabeth Gaskell, not up there with the great 19th century novels but very charming. I haven't seen the series but I hear good things about it.

I finally got around to reading The Help this month, and I'm almost finished with it (haven't seen the film version yet, but I hope to soon...).

What can I say that hasn't been said already? Even if I hadn't waited for the hype to die down, I think I still would've at least been quite impressed with the distinct, compelling and likable narrative voices author Kathryn Stockett has given her three main characters, as well as the array of believable supporting characters she has developed.

My daughter loves VAMPIRINA BALLERINA, by LueYen Pham and our own Anne Marie Pace! I read Dave LaRochelle and Jeremy Tankard's IT'S A TIGER to my son, and he's been roaring like a tiger ever since. Jeannie Mobley's KATERINA'S WISH is a wonderful MG novel - serious themes, and a lot of heartache for the characters. It's an excellent work of historical fiction. Moving on to Trent Reedy's latest, STEALING AIR.

Finally read BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY. So excellent! I checked out a bunch of books at once and just meant to read the first few pages of each and see what they were like before going off to back to school night, but the others are in a heap and I've just finished Ruta's book. (And looking back, I see Ruta is RES! Which makes me even happier that the book is by one of ours. )

Gobble up My Life as a Stuntboy by Janet Tashjian last night, staying up waaay too late to do so. Very closely plotted, simply told yet engaging even for an adult, illustrations for some of the out-of-the-way words (limousine, scenario, intensifies). I'm very impressed.

I just finished reading Heroes of the Valley to the kids, by Jonathon Stroud. It was a fun story and the kids loved it. I did edit bits of text as I read because it was LONG and... a little thick with description. It's also firmly between YA and MG, I thought. So I toned down some of it for my 6 year old.

I started The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place tonight with them, and we all love it so far. It has a great voice -reminiscent of Jane Eyre, but clearly for children...

And the 6 year old has me reading George Brown Class Clown Attack of the Tighty Whities. *sigh* She adores it.

I recently read Sammy Keyes and the Night of the Skulls by Wendelin Van Draanen. I love Sammy Keyes and Halloween, so I really  enjoyed reading this one!

Last week I read the ARC of The Diviners by Libba Bray . I'm always amazed at how she can pull together so many things and make them work in a story. Plus there were supernatural happenings, murders, and a mystery, set in 1920's NYC.

Now I'm reading Spellbound by Anna Dale. I'm at the part where the adventure is about to go ahead full steam. I picked up this book because her last book, Whispering to Witches, is one of my favorite MG books.
