After 17 years of teaching mostly pre and early teens, I'm heading back to the 3rd grade classroom. My personal library is mostly YA and some MG. Not much for younger kids in my collection. I'd appreciate any suggestions you may have for read alouds and books I could include on my library shelf. Thanks!

CLEMENTINE! IVY & BEAN might also be worth a look. My daughter's current read-aloud favorites are Gail Carson Levine's fairy books. Kate Messner's THE BRILLIANT FALL OF GIANNA Z won the E.B. White award last year.

I'll second GIANNA Z!  Also, pretty much everything by Roald Dahl is prefect for that age, and so much fun to read aloud.  Other recs: the Bunnicula books, the Time Warp Trio series, Sideways Stories From Wayside School.

I second Theodosia books! I ADORE THEM!!!

I also think Savvy is a fabulous read aloud book - but it might be better for 4th graders?

Kevin Henkes' JUNONIA; Kate DiCamillo's BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE. For non-fiction, try the fabulous SCIENTISTS IN THE FIELD series. X.J. and Dorothy Kennedy's KNOCK AT A STAR has some fun poetry in it.

Chris D'Lancey's Dragon books are fabulous! Very sweet - and he has both longer ones for older kids and shorter ones (the Dragons of Wayward Crescent series).
Also, the Rowan Hood books and Enola Holmes books by Nancy Springer are very good.
My daughter loved Geronimo Stilton books then.

OH, and Squids Will Be Squids by Jon Sczeika (or however you spell that) is fabulous! It would be great for a kid to pull out and read one of the "fables" at a time. So great!
