Does anyone know which publishers/editors are especially open to poetry collections in addition to Wordsong, the poetry imprint of Boyds Mills Press? Laurie

The Mary Ballard Poetry Prize (20 - 40 page chapbook) accepts collections for children. Only open 5 more days, though (deadline June 30). No fee to enter. Book contract and $500 advance.

This is a motivational thread! I do write children's poems, mostly when I am taking a break from my WIP which is a novel, but I've never submitted. I just never knew where to start. Maybe it's time!

I just got contributor copies yesterday. And the same day, got copies for High Five too! I have a poem in the September issue (which is out now).

It's so exciting to see work in print.

In the past few years, I've sold poems to Hopscotch, Ladybug, Highlights, Highlights High Five. I haven't been writing much poetry lately, focusing more on books, but Highlights and the Carus group are my top two picks. I've been very happy with the finished products in those mags.

Definitely joining in on the group hug for poets    Poetry can be difficult to find a publishing home for...but I love it, and I don't think I'll ever give it up entirely!

Personally, I find prose much more difficult to write and submit. Partially because I don't practice as much. I prefer the structure of metrical verse, whether I'm writing something short or pb-length.

I've had a few poems published in magazines:  Ladybug, one coming up in Highlights, Fun For Kidz, Pockets, Fandangle,   maybe 30 or so altogether.  I've had way more poems for adults make it into lit. mags and anthologies.  You'd think it would be the other way around, that the market would be better for children's poetry, but that doesn't seem to be the case for me.

I've sold poems to Stories for Children and Ladybug so far. I have three collections of poetry, but no luck yet getting them published! I wish everyone loved poetry like we do!   :

I have a poem posted today (plus a video of me reading it) at No Water River.

No Water River is an amazing and totally unique resource on the Internet -- Renee LaTulippe has been collecting videos of poets reading their own poems and has quite a library now. She also includes really thoughtful extension activities for teachers and students. She also has a collection of videos of herself reading classic children's poems.

Glad I ran across this thread. I really love children's poetry (and poetry in general) and am glad to see it is still being created, sold, published, etc.! I dabble in it myself so this gives me hope

Just wanted to mention, I recently went to the Scholastic Book Fair at my daughter's school, and I would say about 60% of the picture books were written in rhyme.

On a side note, I was excited to see three blueboarders represented! Jean Reidy ("Too Princessy!"--written in rhyme), Tammi Sauer, and Jodi Moore.
