I want to build a classroom library of Halloween picture books. Recommnedations? (for 5th grade)
And I wanted an excuse to use these spooky icons :blackcat :skeleton :bat :pumpkin :skull
:thankyou
-
This isn't a Halloween PB, but has a very Halloween feel to it because of the illustrations and the characters. . . THE DUNDERHEADS by Paul Fleischman and illustrated by David Roberts. I think it would be perfect for 5th graders, too.
In our house, we love BONE SOUP by Cambria Evans (a Halloween twist on Stone Soup).
-
My book (I Need My Monster) has a Halloween tag because it includes monsters. Funny, I never think of it as Halloween. I also love Skelelton Hiccups.
-
THE HALLO-WEINER by Dav Pilkey. :dr
-
Frankie Stein by Lola Schaefer. A very favorite in this house! :coffin
-
Boris and Bella. Great illustrations and writing. Great for 2nd-5th graders.
(I think it is even more than 600 words... perish the thought!)
-
The Story of the Jack O'Lantern by Katherine Tegen and Halloween Night by Marjorie Dennis Murray both illustrated by the great Brandon Dorman. But I've always loved the classic, It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. Who can resist the peanut gang, at any age!
-
For 5th grade you should get Eve Merriam's Halloween ABC with illustrations by Lane Smith (very early in his career--his first or second book?). Quite a sophisticated book, and genuinely creepy in places. Not for little kids, but your 5th graders will appreciate it.
It's OP but I've seen used copies on Amazon and elsewhere.
-
:wow Thank you everyone!!
I have a feeling many of these books will end up in my home library, too.
Oh, I just noticed this fun Halloween friend :medusa
-
This is not specifically a Halloween story, but I always loved Dr. Seuss story about the pale green pants with nobody inside them. Can anyone remember the title?
-
HALLOWILLOWEEN by Calef Brown
-
I love BY THE LIGHT OF THE HALLOWEEN MOON by Caroline Stutson. Also FRANK WAS A MONSTER WHO WANTED TO DANCE (blanking on author right now). I know there are many more that I like, but those are the first two that came to mind.
-
The pale green pants story is hysterical! I think it is called What was I Scared Of? and is one of a few stories in the book The Sneetches and Other Stories.
-
I second HALLOWILLOWEEN, and not just becasue it's fun to say! I also thought ALPHA OOPS! H IS FOR HALLOWEEN was cute and could be stretched to fifth grade, despite being an alphabet book.
As far as not-quite Halloween books, ones that I read aloud to older classes this time of year are THE WIDOW'S BROOM (Van Allsburg), ALIENS ARE COMING (McCarthy, about the 1930's War of the World radio panic on Halloween), and FRANKENSTEIN MAKES A SANDWICH (Rex).
-
In addition to the titles mentioned above:
Vunce Upon a Time, A Vampire Is Coming to Dinner!, Even Monsters Need Haircuts, The Halloween Kid, BOO!, Mostly Monsterly, I’m Not Afraid of This Haunted House…
I have more Halloween books but my daughter borrowed them last week for her class, and now I can't remember what they were. LOL. I'm about to order Monster Town. Have you seen it yet? I love the retro illustrations! More picture books with the spooky/creepy factor: Once Upon a Twice and Just A Minute.
-
I absolutely love Halloween books. I have a list of my favorites on my blog: http://frolickingthroughcyberspace.blogspot.com/2009/10/halloween-favorites.html and there's also GHOSTs IN THE HOUSE by Kazuno Kohara: http://frolickingthroughcyberspace.blogspot.com/2009/10/ghosts-in-house.html
I'm definitely going to have to check out Monster Town, Kimberly Lynn. It sounds right up my alley. :skeleton And I've heard great things about Hallowilloween too, and An Eyeball in My Garden.
-
WHERE'S MY MUMMY? by Carolyn Crimi & John Manders
THE MONSTERS' TEST by Brian J. Heinz & Sal Murdocca
QUACKENSTEIN HATCHES A FAMILY by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen & Brian T. Jones
MOSTLY MONSTERLY by Tammi Sauer & Scott Magoon
and another vote for BONE SOUP by Cambria Evans
-
And don't forget that in a few years we should add taradawn's own The Monstore to this list! :chesirecat

Oh wow! Aren't you sweet! Thanks so much.

Ooooo Halloween books are so much fun! Here's a few:
Meaner than Meanest by Kevin Somers
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson
Too Many Pumpkins by Linda White

I just came across this link while researching and thought I'd share it in case it helps...
http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/halloween (http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/halloween)
Lots of my personal faves as well as some I haven't heard of but would like to check out.
Also, just thought of another:
Druscilla's Halloween by Sally Walker (Carolrhoda) -- about a witch with creaky knees who must invent the first flying broom. So funny!
-
It's non-fiction, but a wonderfully creepy (but still educational!) book: The Gruesome Guide to World Monsters, by Judy Sierra. It's arranged by continents, and covers the monsters of folklore for each area. The illustrations by Henrik Drescher are great!!! :cheerleader
-
Missed this thread but here's a great PB by one of my crit partners, Lynne Berry:
The Curious Demise of a Contrary Cat
Illustrated by Luke LaMarca
Published by Simon & Schuster (2006)
For preschool to 2nd grade

May I please add a plug for my silly-spooky illustrated poetry collection SCARUM FAIR?
It's aimed at mid and upper elementary grades. Some reviewers have found it too
scary for the little ones, though my six-year-old neighbor (girl) has it memorized.
I'm currently giving away free copies through my website and/or see the Book
Giveaway thread for details.
Happy halloween!
-
Jessica, I have your book on hold at the library. I can’t wait to read it!
-
I JUST found this thread, and I think it's great! What a fun collection of Halloween books--perfect for my favorite holiday!
And I've heard great things about Hallowilloween too, and An Eyeball in My Garden.
Thanks so much for the Eyeball mention, Heather! It's not a picture book, but it is an illustrated collection of spooky poetry geared toward upper graders. I just shared it with some 5th graders on Monday, and they really enjoyed it!

I love Halloween picture books! I posted a review of Only A Witch Can Fly by Alison McGhee here: http://readatouille.blogspot.com/2011/10/bewitching-october-reads-only-witch-can.html (http://readatouille.blogspot.com/2011/10/bewitching-october-reads-only-witch-can.html) I'm hoping to add a few more. One of my students recently brought in a terrific one, if I can remember the title...

Also, check out Little Goblins Ten by Pamela Jane.

I have a book coming out next year. Not Halloween as per say, but it's an alphabet book about spiders.
Arachnibet by: Tracey M. Cox
I'll post a picture of it when it becomes available.
-
I’ll be looking for ARACHNIBET. Awesome title!
Finally got to read SCARUM FAIR this week. So good! It’s a perfect mix of funny and creepy. The dark humor had me laughing out loud. My favorite poems are “The Scary-Go-Round” and “A Snap Decision.”
Also came across another new Halloween-y picture book I love called THE HEEBIE-JEEBIE JAMBOREE by Mary Ann Fraser.
-
Hey, thanks for liking Scarum Fair! And for telling me which poems are your favorites :grin2:
I just got very unexpected good news -- it made the master list for the 2012-2013 Texas Bluebonnet Award!
Yay for poetry!
Keep up the good blog work!
Jessica

The House that Witchy Built by Dian de la Casa is a fun Halloween-y book that begs for audience participation.
-
My book (I Need My Monster) has a Halloween tag because it includes monsters. Funny, I never think of it as Halloween. I also love Skelelton Hiccups.
Oh, my daughter LOVES this book! She is really scared of the girl monster, oddly enough, but she loves the book :grin2:

I really like THE PERFECT PUMPKIN PIE by Denys Cazet.
