My main interest is writing graphic novels, aimed at (mostly) MG. I also have one idea for a PB that's been simmering for years, and I don't have any others planned.

I see that the recommendation is that one should have 3 PB manuscripts before shopping them. That of course makes sense, any agent or publisher will want to know that a creator is no one trick pony.

Of course, that leaves me as a one-trick pony. It's possible that I could make more PBs but I don't have other ideas at the moment, and my one idea is basically an extended fart joke. So I'm uncertain how or whether I should pursue the idea at all.

There are a number of successful one-off PBs that come from writers who focus in other areas. If you are primarily focusing on the graphic novels, I'd suggest you use that form to build your platform and name recognition. This will give you a stable base to branch out.

Yes! And you never know one good turn into more. I believe that the difference between a graphic novel and a picture book is small.

The three manuscript guideline only pertains to querying agents. You can certainly sub to publishers (who are open) with a single manuscript.

Thanks everybody! I do believe that the difference between GNs & PBs is small. Some GNs are very much like PBs and some PBs (like many of Ben Clanton's) are basically comics. They're both fun mediums.
