Hi!
I am going to have a final contract with my publisher by the end of the week and my timeline for illustrations is shorter. Sketches will be done by December this year and final illustrations including cover Feb/March 2022. My book will be ready fall of 2022.

Picture Books (PB) / Re: back matter
« Last post by Vijaya on July 18, 2021, 06:29 AM »
:welcome Michelle. Given the standard length of PBs, you still have to budget 2-3 pages for front matter and maybe a page for back. Depending on how the book will be bound, the 1st and last pages could be pasted, so for a 24 pg PB you'll want everything to fit in 20-21 pages and for 32 pg in 28 pages.  The art director will take care of these details though.

Here's a great resource by Debbie Ridpath Ohi: https://www.inkygirl.com/inkygirl-main/2015/11/4/free-picture-book-thumbnail-templates-for-writers-and-illust.html  and more here: https://www.debbieohi.com/pbcreation

Picture Books (PB) / back matter
« Last post by michelle-orrelle on July 18, 2021, 05:54 AM »
Hi Writers,
I would like to include information as a backmatter.
I understand manuscripts are 24 or 32 pages long.
I am making a dummy, so does this mean I need to have text for 22 pages and 2 pages of back matter or Text 30 pages and 2 pages of backmatter?
Thanks

Thank you all so much for your input and for your congratulations! At first I felt a bit disheartened but I'm feeling excited about the prospect of creating more in the interim knowing I do have something coming out down the line. I appreciate all your feedback so much!

Picture Books (PB) / Re: Time between booking an illustrator to publication
« Last post by HaroldU on July 17, 2021, 07:20 AM »
This is not at all unusual. These days, two years is probably the fastest you can reasonably expect --a year for the illustrator to work, a few months for production, and nine months (yes!) to get advance promotion and sales efforts lined up (this includes the lead time required by B&N and Amazon). If the illustrator has any other projects already committed, you add more time, which as others have said can be years. The pandemic may have added a month or two to this, but it's not a significant factor.
