Any recommendations for PBs that have an old-school detective story twist -- I'm thinking tone/dialogue/characters that are reminiscent of detective movies, I guess.  I have TOUGH COOKIE by David Wisniewski from the library now and it's a good example of what I'm looking for:

"They call me a tough cookie.  I guess I am.

Came from a regular batch.  Lots of dough.  Lived teh high life.  Top of the Jar.  Then I hit bottom and stayed there.  It was rough.  Still is.  But you get used to it.

Life's still sweet.  Just a little stale."

Hoped you might have some suggestions!

Arthur Accused: A Marc Brown Arthur Chapter Book

This one isn’t a PB, but I remember when they aired this episode that Buster, the detective, was very reminiscent of an old-school detective. I’m hoping the book has the same tone. :crossedfingers

What Really Happened to Humpty Dumpty is told from the perspective of his detective brother, Joe Dumpty. It's pretty funny. :)
