The SCBWI has a free publication for members that lists "book doctors" and independent editors. I believe you will find it in the Resource Library.

Another thing you can do is ask to do a critique exchange in the critique area of the boards. It is helpful both for someone to critique your work and for you to critique someone else's. For some reason, verbalizing what works and what doesn't and why is very educational.

Great point, Olmue! If you do want to pay for a professional critique, it would help to swap critiques with others and get it in the best possible shape first. I typically have at least three to four rounds of critiques/revisions with my groups and crit buddies before I consider having a professional critique and then submitting to agents or editors.

Pam Calvert is a published pb author, freelance editor, and member of this community. Here is a link to her Picture Book University series on her blog. There's a "Get Critiqued" button on the right hand side for fees and more information. She is a savvy, thoughtful editor -- I highly recommend her.

Post the work to the SCBWI Critique exchange. You'll get great comments and they're free. Look for groups or other opportunities within your local chapter too. You'll often find well published authors at critiquenics and in the groups. You want to be as ready as you can be before paying for a critique. I've also consulted a local English teacher to copy edit.
