I just wrote/ illustrated my first children’s book.  I am wondering how to go about finding a publisher and the correct one.  Do I need to find an agent before submitting to a publisher?

Hi Emily

There isn't an easy answer to this question. What do you mean by "correct one"? For the biggest sales? For the subject material? For the market niche?

For each of these questions you can find a fantastic comparable (and newly published) PB and find the publisher/agent for that writer/illustrator.

But are you sure you are at that point? Every writer wants their first book on a shelf ASAP, but what they really need first is quality feedback. Have you shared you work with other writers? Have you had others read your story aloud to you? Because you want to make sure your submission is your absolutely best attempt.

Tips on finding and agent or publisher can be found in threads here: https://www.scbwi.org/boards/index.php?board=7.0. But David is correct. The first tip is to make sure the work, writing and art, are up to the standards of today's market. The board has places to seek critiques of the writing and art and to find critique partners.
