What suggestions do you have for recent (last 2 years or so) must-read MGs?

I especially like:
- great writing
- great voice
- funny
- fantasy
- time travel
- historical
- animals

Things I don't like:
- someone dying from a fatal disease
- anything depressing
- sports
- religion

I think you'll love THIS IS NOT THE ABBY SHOW by Debbie Reed Fischer. It has great writing, a fantastic voice, and is extremely funny.

I'd also suggest THE FIRST LAST DAY by Dorian Cirrone. It's a fantastic read and has a lot of the elements you especially like. I almost didn't add it because of something that happens to a minor character, but I still think you'd really enjoy this.

I am reading The Girl Who Drank the Moon now and it is just as amazing as everyone says!

I am also a huge fan of Sage Blackwood's Jinx trilogy and SE Grove's Mapmakers trilogy. Terrific, imaginative fantasy.

If you guys like "The Girl Who Drank the Moon," you MUST read "The Real Boy " by Anne Ursu. It's one of the best written and delicately crafted books I've ever come across.

"The Lost Property Office" was pretty cool, too.

Books I'm looking forward to getting my hands on: "A Boy Called Bat," "A Rambler Steals Home," and "Love, Ish." (Love, Ish seems to have a fatal disease in it, though.)

Elise Gravel's Olga and the Smelly Thing from Nowhere. I'm reading it aloud to my kids - way more fun to read aloud. I think it's MG? publisher says ages 8-12.
