Title: pay rate for magazine poems?
Post by: kimw on June 06, 2008, 05:53 AM
I am just curious...
I know what a few of the pay rates are, but am unfamiliar with magazines such as Boys Quest and Nature Friend. Does anyone know what their pay rate is? (for poems)  :dollar  :eh2
 :thanks2

Kim, I haven't had poems in either of those, but if someone is wondering about the pay rate for puzzles with the Bluffton trio (which I was until one of my acceptances finally got its turn for publication), all of mine have been $15.

That's interesting, Ev.  All of my puzzles with Bluffton have been $10.  I just got a check for one last month.  Perhaps they pay more for regular contributors. I haven't sold them any poems, but some of my critique partners have and were paid $10.

That is interesting, Rebecca.  It's good that you posted so other writers will know what to expect.

I suspect you're probably right--that they give a bit more to regular contributors.  I've had over 50 acceptances from them, so maybe they want to keep me happy. LOL  (Actually, I am quite happy--I think they're great magazines.)

My very first Bluffton check was for a poem, and it was for $15.  Hmmm....

Oh my, this is interesting.  My self-esteem is suffering just a bit now :lol.  I could have supersized my lunch, added a wax to my car wash or bought my dogs the name brand kibble with that extra $5!   :dollar
Wonder what's up with that?

Maybe with the poems it depends on length.

Maybe with the puzzles it depends on how involved they are or how different they are from the usual kind they get.

I guess there could be lots of factors.

I had two puzzles (identical kind) accepted by a publisher (not Bluffton) and for the second one they paid me $5 less than they did for the first one.  Go figure that one.  Maybe someone was just in a more generous mood one day than the other.

Ev may be right about that.  My poem was a longer one. I'm certain that it has nothing to do with the quality of your work.  If they didn't like it, they wouldn't have accepted in the first place.

Don't let this be a blow to your self-esteem.  This could even be an honest mistake, really.  Those folks tend to make lots of mistakes, from rejecting ms twice, to misspelling their own mag title incorrectly!  It could happen.

I would just let it go, really.  But if it is bugging you, you could always e-mail them and ask for claification.

Buglady and Ev:
You are both always so sweet!   :thankyou
I was mostly joking about my self-esteem--$15--$10--I doubt any of us do magazine pieces for the money.  But I have always found the Bluffton magazines interesting in that payment is never discussed nor are there contracts.  At least I've never had a contract with them, I've always been asked to write a letter stating I want my piece to appear & money hasn't been discussed (so I've nothing to be unhappy about as I wasn't promised a certain amount).  It's just that their process has always seemed a little mysterious to me.  I've been paid the same for full-page puzzles as partial page ones so I don't know if that is it.  Maybe it has to do with being a regular contributor or the time it was accepted.  Or . . .  :lol maybe it IS me.  Maybe they've heard I have no business using that extra money to super-size anything at the drive-through!
On a more serious note, KimW--the Bluffton mags are very nice to work with, whatever they pay.  I've never had anything with Nature Friend.

My experience with Nature Friend has been with the past two editors. I have had nothing published by this one, yet.

I thought I'd just bump this thread up since I have a little more information to add about the Bluffton group.  My first seven puzzles with them were $15 and then my last three were $10.  Since I was curious about the difference I decided to call and ask.  I talked with Jeanne, who was warm and friendly and helpful.  She didn't know the answer, but said she'd find out and email me.

What she told me was that if the contributor provided a lot of art to go with the puzzle then they paid an extra $5.  (I suspect that puzzles which are longer and more involved may also sometimes fall in this category.)

Best wishes,
Ev

I'm waiting on publication of two of my poems with a new Canadian magazine R.E.A.L. Canadian kids - and I'm afraid I'm going to sound like I'm boasting when I say I'm being paid $100 per poem for single use in Canada.  Mind you, the mag hasn't had its first run yet... and I don't get paid 'til it's been printed... sooooooo

Maude,
Do you have the web site for R.E.A.L. Magazine. I haven't heard of them. Would love to check them out.
Thanks,
Kim
