Title: Not Just the Facts, Ma'am
Post by: Stef on May 12, 2009, 08:29 PM
Tracy Ruckman asked me to contribute an article to Examiner.com on writing historical fiction in honor of National Children's Book Week.  You can read my article here, and we welcome your comments!  Thanks, everyone!

What a rich article, Stef!  I've forever been drawn to read HF and, more recently, compelled to write it.  Your insight gives me some helpful ideas for character development, too.  Thank you!

By the way....Dublin, OH?!  That's where my family lived before my folks retired to Bellefontaine!  And I was just in your neck of the woods ten days ago, when we visited the Columbus Zoo!

For Pete's sake, Carrots!  We lived in Bellefontaine before we moved to Dublin!  Beautiful place.

Did you see Beco the baby elephant at the zoo?  My daughter went to see him and ended up seeing a famous zoo human.  Check out my Facebook photo album... http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2027218&id=1245897839&l=1791ba20ef This is a public link, so you don't need to be on Facebook.  Too bad I didn't know you were here!

Thanks for your words of encouragement.  Much appreciated, and I'm glad you enjoyed the article.  Best wishes with your HF project.  Should've known you'd like HF with a name like carrots.  Green Gables?

Isn't Beco a cutie! We've seen him twice now. I live in Hilliard, OH. Are you in the local SCBWI chapter?

That's my next order of business, Raynbow.  I met delightful Susan (mermaid 1110 on the Blue Boards--were you with her, by any chance?) at the Ohioana Book Festival, and I also met gracious Amjed Qamar there--matter of fact, we were tablemates.  Car from the Blue Boards appeared there, too, and we're already friends, so I would be amongst good company counting you.  Plus we're neighbors.

Umm, hope I'm allowed to digress in my own thread, haha!    :hijacked   :hangloose  :moose  :pp

Jack Hanna AND Beco?!   Life is good.  We missed the precious little critter....the lines were too long for a feisty two year-old and painfully impatient five year-old to manage.  Instead, we watched him in the videos airing in the food court near the playground.

Absolutely (and I'm a freckled red-head - okay, now grey and red, too)!

I'll have to PM you next year before we make the trek!

I wasn't at the book festival, but I know Susan from the SCBWI meetings. Even if you don't sign up immediately for SCBWI, you can go to two meetings without being a member. They're held at the Upper Arlington library. Very close to you! I hope we run into each other sometime!

Gray and brown for me.  Yes, please do PM me next time!

Raynbow, thanks for the two free meeting heads up, plus the venue info.  Sounds like fun.

Well, what do you know?  Liana Laverentz asked me if she could post Not Just the Facts, Ma'am on her blog, and it's running today and tomorrow(7/8-7/9/2009).  If you missed it the first time, it's not too late to visit Liana's blog.  Tell her I sent you!  She features author articles on Wednesdays; in fact, she says: "Slowly I've been changing my Wednesday format from all guest author interviews, to articles by editors, agents, and writers on writing."  So you never know--she may want content from you.   :smile

 :love  Hi Stef,
Thanks for sharing your article, Not Just The Facts, Ma'am.  I gobbled it up!  I write historical fiction for child, and am always searching for other authors with the same passion.  Do you know of any listservs or groups I can join?  Also, I blog on my website, www.RitaHubbard.com.  I would love to run your article, with your permission.  How does that work?

All best wishes,

Rita L.
