Title: Bumples Online Magazine
Post by: lisagailgreen on November 23, 2009, 08:52 PM
A friend of mine sent me this email and I sent in a poem immediately.  Someone got back to me within a couple of hours and said she loved it and would pass it on to the editors and I would hear within the next two weeks.  Pretty good response time!  Anyway here's the email:

 NEW PAYING MARKET
Bumples
http://bumples.com/
Bumples is a NEW INTERACTIVE childrens' e-magazine of humorous and lively stories, illustrations and games.  Bumples brings fresh giggles, thoughtful hoots and creative tickles to the young reader.
Children between four and ten and their parents and teachers for our read-out-loud littlest subscribers will find stories and poems about sports, animals, magical creatures and societies within the Bumples' web pages.  Stories are uniquely supplemented with interactive puzzles, games, illustrations and activities which makes story telling all the more engaging.

Bumples e-magazine is published with the promise to tickle all the funny muscles between the readers' ears and below their nose, very, very generously.

We are currently looking for upbeat fiction about animals, sports, magical creatures, children and the activities they enjoy - in mystery, serial, adventure and fantasy formats.  The door is pretty wide open at Bumples in terms of topics and genre.  Poems and illustrations are also solicited.

E-mail manuscripts (pdf files preferred) with a brief introductory letter to editor@bumples.com  Limited stories to 800 words for ages 4-10 and to 2,000 words for ages 9-10.  Poems should be no longer than 30 lines.  Puzzles and games will also be reviewed. Sample illustrations in low res jpeg format may also be submitted.  Bumples is published online as an e-magazine and does not appear in print.

Lisa, thanks again for posting about Bumples.  I submitted a short story, heard back immediately that I'd know in two weeks, and today I received an e-mail that they'd like to use it in a January issue!   :snoopy

It was so funny, Outlook Express wouldn't let me submit. It kept coming back undeliverable. That had never happened before. I got online and used their contact box to let them know but they said they had no filters and try again. I couldn't even "reply" to Jennifer when she emailed me.  :grrr
I waited a few days, very frustrated, then I got an idea.  I remembered I had RoadRunner mail. I never use it and it is different from Outlook. This time it did not come back! My story may get rejected but at least it got there!

I decided to post this in case someone else is having trouble with Outlook doing that. The message said it didn't recognize the email address.

Weird!  I guess it pays to have more than one email.  I use google mail, but I also have a hotmail account just in case.  Well, good luck!  Hope you get an acceptance!

Hey Stephen,

I received this email yesterday from Bumples and I remembered your post here.

Dear Bumple friends,
We at Bumples want to wish everybody a Happy New Years and also thank everybody that has e-mailed us. We have only been on line for one month but the positive response has been overwhelming.
When we decided to write and publish a new interactive children’s magazine, we were not sure how it would go over. The response has shown us that the children and parents like what they see. Going forward the magazine is going to be much better than the sample. We couldn’t do that without all the wonderful stories that we have received. We will be using new illustrators and a lot more animation. Also sounds will be introduced in future issues.
Our first real issue with new writers and illustrators will be out January 15th... Please check it out and tell your friends. Also we are open to any ideas or suggestions.
Happy New Year and we hope that everyone has a wonderful new year.

I bought a subscription too (I figured they already bought two of my things and I have two kids in the right age range) and Jen wrote an email thanking me.  So it doesn't go unnoticed, though I know it isn't necessary.  It's a clever concept, I hope they're successful.  And yes the $$ doesn't hurt either!

Does anyone know if the quality of editing/proofreading has improved? The first issue I saw was littered with mistakes. I read somewhere (can't remember where) that they had plans to improve this aspect of the magazine. Have any of you subscribers noticed a change?

Thanks!

They're working on it.  I had two pieces in the Jan. issue, and I had e-mailed the editor with my concerns about some of the errors.  She just e-mailed me with an updated copy of my revised piece, said they were checking the magazine line by line, and that she would work hard to make sure these types of errors never happened again.

I'd actually like to know this as well. I had a piece accepted for a later issue and was told that my payment would come the month after published. No problem except that there was no mention of a contract.

This is a paying market - pay on publication, I believe - and there is no contract.  I had two pieces published in their first issue (out in the middle of January), and haven't been paid yet.  I'm being patient.

She does seem like a nice person. I also have something scheduled to be published (in September). I was just concerned because I hadn't heard anything on the story I submitted over 4 months ago, and then had my emails bounce when I tried inquiring on the story's status. I'll try the info@bumples.com for the inquiry, and will be patient. Thanks, Writeaway. And, thanks, Ev, for the information you provided, as well.

Just a quick note from the editor in case you were wondering about the latest issue. The editor is very nice and working hard so I didn't mind at all.

I am afraid that we have to move your story to May 15th and June 1st.  We were very late in getting out the April 1st issue, and I am using the April 15th issue for May 1st.  Then I am moving the May stories to other issues.
I am very sorry to do this and thank you for your patience.

I'm also both a contributor and a subscriber, and I remain quite concerned. I saw that a June issue was up a couple of weeks ago, but couldn't actually get into it, and then it disappeared. I hope the editor's able to work out the issues... I would think paying subscribers who aren't writers and who don't have a stake in the magazine continuing might be upset.

I received an email from Jennifer today. She mentioned how her programmer had quit in May and that she's had "2 months of intense learning and trial and error." She's hoping to have a new programmer up and working by Sept. and be back to 2 issues a month on time. She goes on to say she's totally committed to making Bumples a successful magazine and asks for patience as she continues to work out the bugs. She's looking forward to more games tied to stories, more interaction, and prizes for readers. She apologizes for the delay in getting stories published and will do her best to get them in future isues. She ends by saying she's now working on catching up on emails. Hope this helps and that everyone hears good news soon!

I believe it is. I just sent a response e-mail to her but don't really expect anyting back. However, a few weeks ago I sent an e-mail and got no response. I sent another one a few weeks later with 2nd request in the subject line and she got back to me right away, stating she's still trying to catch up with e-mails and such. In my honest opinion it  kinda sounds like it's hectic over there. I hope she can come out on top because she seems to be a really nice person.

Has anyone talked to her lately? I've sent three emails since the first of June and heard nothing back. They were regarding payment for a story that came out mid April and I was told would be sent May 1st. I told her I was fine with the fact the payment might be late--I understand things had been challenging for her, I just wondered if she had any idea when she would be able to send it.

I've seen others hear from her regarding upcoming stories during this time, so I'm wondering what's up. Anybody have insight? I hope things get back on track for her, it's a neat publication and she seems like a genuinely nice person.

Hi Michelle,

I was wondering the same thing. Originally my story was to appear in the May 15th and June 1st issue. (It's in two parts) but I haven't heard anything since. I e-mailed the editor 2 weeks ago and she said she had to push things back due to editorial issues. Nothing since then. I'm wondering if other people who have had their stories published with this magazine have been paid. I'm thinking I may need to pull my story but wanted to give her little more time to get back on track--she's just been so nice whenever I contact her. I hope things straighten out.

Have any of you checked the guidelines lately? I just did, thinking Jennifer may possibly make a public announcement regarding the status of Bumples at one time rather than responding to each individual query. The following was posted on the Writer's Guidelines Rights and Payments section: Rights vary. Right now we can not pay for your poems or stories.

Nicky, There was a September issue, it was the Haunted House issue. But I don't think she's keeping to any kind of a schedule. I had a story she accepted for the June issue that still hasn't been used. And honestly, if she's not going to pay writers anymore then I'm going to withdraw it. Bummer.

This is disappointing news. I also had a piece accepted for September - a puzzle poem. Don't know if it was published as I don't get the magazine. And now if she is no longer paying. . . .  I guess I will have to try contacting her again. I didn't want to give it away for no payment.

I'm curious what she says. I have a piece that's supposed to be in this month. But if she's not honoring earlier commitments made to writers about payment, I'll need to withdraw too.

I'm a subscriber too--was trying to support this new market. AZ Guy, if you want to let me know the name of your puzzle poem, I can check to see if it's been published. I'm not sure there was a September issue though.

Post by: AzGuy on November 05, 2010, 05:13 PM
Cynthia, thank you so much for offering to check the September issue.  According to Bumples' website there was a September Haunted House issue and an October Halloween issue. Anyway, my puzzle poem was titled "Plant Power". It has nothing to do with Halloween or haunted houses, though, so I kind of doubt it was in either issue.

Hopefully, the pieces accepted long ago will receive payment when/if they are published. Changing the terms and publishing for no payment without an author's approval would not be at all professional.

Best of luck to everyone.

Guy

Have you come across a math puzzle called "Pirate's Plus" ?

I submitted this puzzle a while back and they said they were interested in publishing it along with a pirate story she thought she had in an upcomingissue. She said if they did have one, they wanted the puzzle to go along with it but I never heard back from them. I emailed several times without a response.

I'm a subscriber, too.  Though I haven't read the issues in a while.

One thing that you may not know is that in addition to putting out a monthly theme issue, Jennifer also tries to do a holiday or seasonal issue.  So, this is difficult to keep track of because she's running behind in her theme issues, but also putting out seasonal issues when she can.  My story was supposed to be in the debut issue of Bumples, but actually appeared in the third issue they printed, and I was confused as well.

Yet another source of confusion is that the magazine isn't consistently released at the same time each month.  Sometimes it's the first week, sometimes not.

I have a poem that has been accepted for their December issue, and I'm doubting that it will appear on time given how far behind the magazine is.

That being said, I do hope that Jennifer is sticking to her commitments.  She's a nice gal to "talk" to via e-mail, but Bumples seems to be hitting many "bumps" along the road so far.

Liana

I did receive this email. Basically, Jennifer says she's not a quitter, and she believes she can turn Bumples around and make it successful. She mentions the programmer quitting and how she had to take over, at which time she quit her part time job to put all efforts into the mag. Sales slowed as she wasn't marketing the mag. "This meant that I could not pay the writers on time.  I can’t tell you how upsetting that has been for me.  I am afraid that I have hidden from the writers as I did not have an answer."

She spent months trying to get loans, with no luck. "If I owe you money, and you want to subscribe, I will credit what I owe you $12.00.  Just let me know.  All writers whom I owe, I will be paying you interest when I pay you.  Right now I can’t promise when that will be." She mentions posting on her website that she can't pay for stories and that that will take effect in January. "As soon as I catch up on payments, I will resume paying for the stories. I know how hard it is to make money on your stories, and I don't want to continue to promise to pay when I can't. If any writer whom I promised to publish doesn’t want to have their story used, please let me know. Going forward I will ask you before I publish it.  I hope and think that you should keep on trying other publishers until I can turn the magazine around."

She ends by apologizing for not keeping up with payments and thanks everyone for being patient.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, writermutt. That clears things up. She is obviously overwhelmed.

Thank you, Cindy, for checking. Because I wasn't sure if she had used it.

I sent an email to Jennifer and she sent me a note and a copy of the email being sent to everyone else.

Has anyone heard a status update on BUMPLES lately? A while back I was told I'd have a story in the June issue, but as far as I can tell from the website, the latest issue is from spring.

As an update to the thread, BUMPLES is currently a non-paying market. However I did submit a story this spring and there was excellent response time. It's a cute website and good concept. I'll update here if I get any more news.

Ah--just modified my last entry with a new question, but didn't realize that modifying doesn't update the topic so I'm posting again. Thanks for any input!
