Title: How do you pronounce...?
Post by: JodyJS on January 02, 2010, 11:11 AM
Hello, children!

Welcome to the thread for misfit pronouncers.  Those, like me, who are pronunciation-challenged about the world of publishing.  Got a question about how to pronounce a publishing-related item or name?  Got an answer?  Chime in!

I'll begin.
Houghton-Mifflin (pronounced Ho-ton Miff-lin)

Can you help with...
Knopf?
Giroux?

Oh! I know one of these!

I tweeted about my favourite line in JULIE & JULIA: "Is it Knopf or K-nopf. Oh, who cares..." and Knopf (the pub!) tweeted me back saying it was hard "K" or "K-nopf".

 :smile

I remember wondering the same things and called the companies and asked receptionists.

I believe you just pronounce all the consonants in Knopf. kuh-NAWP-f.  Giroux is basically juh-ROO or jer-ROO.

My quick tries at phonetic pronunciations are probably colored by regionalism, so take it with a grain of salt.  But I'm close enough.

Really? I've always prounced it Haw-tin Miff-lin. As for Knopf, I've always silenced the K to pronounce the word Nof. At least I got Giroux right.  :snoopy  (Speaking of which, I think I have something out to them.)

Title: Re: How do you pronounce...?
Post by: JodyJS on January 02, 2010, 11:26 AM
K-nawp-f?  With three syllables?

And juh-ROO?  I thought it might a hard g sound at the beginning.

Glad I asked!

Oh, Tim Trav-a-(g)lini (silent g, I think)

Writeaway,
Maybe someone else can weigh in. :)

My husband went to school with a Knopf and it is definitely pronounced K-nopf.

(It means "button" in German.)

Okay, how about agents? Is Michael Bourret pronounced the way I think it should be? Boor-ay (so it's kinda french sounding) or does it have a more American flair and sound like a hair accessory? I've even met him before and missed how he introduced himself - but at that conference, I heard his name pronounced both ways. Drove me crazy!
Title: Re: How do you pronounce...?
Post by: mrh on January 02, 2010, 11:38 AM
Okay, someone else weighing in :)

HO-ton -- Long O sound; incidentally the city of Houghton, MI, pronounces it the same

K-nopf -- K is pronounced, not silent.

Here's one I learned when I was a newer writer: ATH-e-NEE-um. I'd been pronouncing it a-THEE-NEE-um
Title: Re: How do you pronounce...?
Post by: JodyJS on January 02, 2010, 11:39 AM
AE,

With a silent p, or silent f?

Linda,

I don't know (so that doesn't really help), but I pronounce it the Frenchy way, like you.
Title: Re: How do you pronounce...?
Post by: mrh on January 02, 2010, 11:40 AM
K-nop-f

All the consonants sound.
Title: Re: How do you pronounce...?
Post by: Marissa Doyle on January 02, 2010, 11:52 AM
Okay, just to be difficult... :)  I've always pronounced it ATH-e-NAY-um, but that may be a regionalism.

The "G" in Giroux is a softer "zhe-roo" rather than a harder "J" as in "jam".
Title: Re: How do you pronounce...?
Post by: Anne Marie on January 02, 2010, 11:55 AM
I say ath-uh-NAY-um, also, Marissa.
Title: Re: How do you pronounce...?
Post by: Joni on January 02, 2010, 12:04 PM
Ath-uh-NAY-um. We had an editor at our conference two years ago. (I said it wrong before, too.)

And it's Bour-ette, though I have a hard time with this one, because I really, really want to make it French and say Bour-ay.

Is it just me, or does the publishing industry do this on purpose? Knopf, Houghton, Ath...  :stars

Exactly.  I actually had /zh/ first, then changed it, then tried to think of a word that exemplified it, came up with garage, realized some people pronounce that word differently, and gave up. :)

I was fairly certain Knopf  is pronounced Nopf as in silent K.
Giroux-Jirow
Houghton-Mifflin - Howton-Mifflin  or Hockton-Mifflin

It really does depends on where you live. :outhouse

I always have to laugh about Houghton, because I asked my agent this question ages and ages ago (Is it HOE-ton, HOW-ton, HUFF-ton, or something else?).  The funny thing is that when I first started working conferences, I called Houghton for a box of Clarion catalogues, and the receptionist who answered the phone said, "Hoo-ton Mifflin, how can I help you?" :dr

***
I also say/have heard ath-en-AY-um.  And not that anybody asked, but just in case, it's Arthur A. Luh-VEEN.  (I had thought it was Luh-VINE.)

***
Now.  Anyone know how to pronounce Larbalestier?

Thanks Joni!

Gotta say, I'm having a great giggle over this thread.  :giggle It feels too good knowing I'm not the only one who didn't know how to say any of these names! I was always too scared to ask.
Title: Re: How do you pronounce...?
Post by: mrh on January 02, 2010, 03:57 PM
Ah -- I got the ATH-e-NEE-um from a writer who spoke at a conference. But I'm Midwest and so was he, so maybe that enters in. Anyway, this topic reminds me of a funny article published by The Horn Book some time ago, about how to pronounce author names.

While we're at it, Delacorte doesn't sound the final e, right? I had a crit partner once who had industry connections who pronounced it Del-a-cor-tay.

This thread is awesome!

I pronounced Michael Bourret with a French pronunciation in my head until I heard an online (radio) interview with him and the interviewer pronounced it Burret (yeah, kinda like barrette).

This is too funny...

Ooh, you know what I just remembered?  There's a website (ecb's on it, right?) where you can hear author's pronounce their own names.  Anybody remember the link?

While we're on the subject...

How exactly do you pronounce Dystel and Goderich?  It could be "dis-tell and Go-der-ich" or "Dye-stel and God-er-ich" or a combination of the two.  Anyone?
Title: Re: How do you pronounce...?
Post by: Joni on January 02, 2010, 04:45 PM
Dye-stel. I'm not positive, but I think Goderich is "rich" rather than "rick." (Anyone know for sure?) And yeah, no EEE on Delacourte. ;)

I've heard Larbalestier pronounced by a bookstore owner, pretty much how it looks except "lester," silent i at the end, but I'm not sure that's as reliable as knowing how JUSTINE pronounces it!

Now if I could just get a few certain people (like my longtime dentist) to pronounce MY name right, ha ha...

Okay, Jody, that's a great site! A lot of names are German (or German-looking Yiddish), and I generally pronounce them accordingly. Well, I sure am wrong!

So glad to know how to say Giroux. I always call them FSG in my mind--or just picture their little logo. Now I can actually talk about them!

Yeah, I have that problem as well.  A lot.  For the record, ee-LISS-uh (EE-LISS-uh works, too).  Now you all know.  :yup

And *sheepish grin* I had to be told how to pronounce your name, too, Joni.  I still want to call you Joan-ee and not John-ee.
Title: Re: How do you pronounce...?

It seems to me that Justine Larbalestier did a blog entry one time on how to pronounce her name and I think the upshot of it was that she didn't care how you say it.  But I could be misremembering . . .

And fuhgietabowt his agency's name. I'd just say DG.

Larissa, I believe you were named after the first Romance Novel I ever read.   :reading2 It was around 1979 and I was 14. Come to think of it, I believe it is the only romance novel I've ever read where the book was named after the main character.

LOL - I actually have a sci fi book called LARISSA, but I can't remember if I've read it or not.  I just keep it because of the title.  My mom tells me she found my name in a baby name book and liked it.  The women on my mom's side have pretty unique names, so she was just continuing the tradition.  I like my name now, but I hated it when I was younger (like middle school).  I tried to get everyone to call me Kate (from my middle name), but it never worked. lol

This is probably a ridiculous question, but is there a shortcut way of referring to SCBWI?

I mean, when spoken out loud. Would you say all the letters? Only some? Does anyone call it Skibwee? Maybe that's my own silly concoction.

SHAY-bn

There's a cute little aside in the movie Julie and Julia where Julia Child (Glenn Close) wonders whether to pronounce her publisher's name K-nopf or Nopf.  Yes, she discovers the K is pronounced.
Another publishing person who's name is frequently mispronounced is Philomel executive editor Jill Santopolo. She tells people this- "It's easy—just think of Marco Polo, only say Santo instead of Marco".

And by the way Philomel has a soft i.

And I've noticed it depends on what region you are in.  When I was with sbk (linda) in the WWA region, everyone up there said skubwee (skib-wee was popular, too).  The region I'm in now doesn't use the nickname, just the initials.  When I said skubwee once, they looked at me weird.  LOL

Re SCBWI, here in Western Australia, we say SQUIBBY. We know it doesn't make sense, but we like it anyway!

I've published my books as Meg rather than Megan partly because I didn't want to have to deal with the constant mispronunciation (it's also why my blog is named "As in Egg").

I wonder how they actually pronounce it since they're an American company. Do they use the French pronunciation? Just curious.

Whenever I go to a restaurant and order a bruschetta, I automatically use the Italian pronunciation "broo-SKET-ah" since I lived in Italy for a bazillion years. But the waiters always say, "Oh, you mean you want a broo-SHET-uh?"  :faint   I just smile and say yes.

Given what you've said, I think it might be 'augggh', actually. :)

Natalie, ditto on the bruschetta, though I don't speak Italian but learned it from an Italian friend. I have the same issue with Japanese words. Try asking a staff member where the 'tawfu' is in the supermarket. Him: Long blank look. Me: Japanese bean curd, you know. Him: Oh, you mean toe-fu. Me: Yes, I guess I do. My daughter gets the same weird looks because she's grown up saying sushi instead of sue-shi.

LOL, reminds me of dog training in the south (in 4-H.) I'm not from here but have been here for a looong time. And the other trainer was from Arizona. It took us a while to catch on. Did you know that in the south 'sit' and 'down' have two syllables? It's "See-it" and "Day-own". No wonder the poor dogs were so confused. The kids were giving them totally different commands than we were. And if one of them wanted to work with our dogs, they had to learn to say sit and down or our dogs completely ignored them.

This thread is cracking me up!  So, in the spirit of procrastination, I have two little stories to share.

1) I grew up in SD, IA, MN, and WI.  I love WI - but the people there say things WEIRD.  Fr Ex: My maiden name is Miller.  I had NEVER had to spell that for someone until we moved to WI.  They pronounce Mueller the same as Miller, so they didn't know which way to spell it.  Oy.  They also call water fountains "bubblers."

2) I can't let my husband do spelling words with my first grade son anymore because he says "set" when he means "sit."  He was getting frustrated with my son the other night because he was writing "pen." The word was "pin."  Oy again.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who says skibwee! Yay! I'm not alone! Who has the time to pronounce seven syllables, for crying out loud? Ooh, I also like the Australian "Squibby". Sounds like a lovable character in an undersea adventure. :)

You got looks for calling soda "pop"? Well, I guess that's Fox Valley, too. Everybody here calls it pop. My parents, who moved to the area from closer to Milw, called it soda. When my husband was a kid, they took a long road trip out West and stopped at some gas station in Montana and asked for "pop." The man was totally mystified and then the light bulb went on: "Oohhh. SO-dy." :)

Yeah, the Milwaukee area thinks it's uber-sophisticated.  It's actually amusing.

My maiden name is Mueller, and I grew up in WI. I just kept correcting everyone. It's myoo-ler people!
Title: Re: How do you pronounce...?
Post by: mrh on January 04, 2010, 06:01 PM
Around here, Mueller is "Miller." But the Olympic skater Peter Mueller from WI was a "Myoo-ler." I guess we're just a confused lot. :) My guess would be that a mixture of German, English, and phonetic pronunciation is at work, plus translation to boot. I know that my own last name is pronounced differently in different parts of the country (heck, my first name, too), so even educated guesses don't compare with getting a pronunciation from the horse's mouth. It's my hope that agents and others will put pronunciation info in their "about our agents" write-up on their sites if they need to, because it's rather human nature to avoid people whose names we can't pronounce. How silly would we feel getting an agent whose name we can't say? If we have any doubt, the suggestion someone else made makes sense: call the receptionist and ask. They've no doubt gotten the question before, anyway.

You could have kept your unmarried name!
Does anyone have problems with my name: Griffin.  It is constantly being spelt incorrectly and drives nuts!

That is true. I could've and perhaps should've. But it is too late now. Some say it is poetic. I say it is phonetic. Alas, hindsight is twenty-twenty.

"Griffin" sounds regal to me. Or of noble clan. Scottish?

Nope, irish.  A prehistoric mythological monster with the  body of a lion and head and wings of an eagle.  Kind of reminds me of a cross between Sam :violin the Eagle and my deceased grandfather.  They both gave me the creeps when I was a kid! :violin

Don't even get me started on my name. My parents stuck me with TWO names no one could spell or pronounce. I was so happy to get married and have the last name Bailey. No one can misspell that, right? Wrong?

Many years ago I worked at a catalog company and we had to give our first names. Mine's Alita. Some people would spell it back to me for some strange reason. It got to a point where I always said yes, that's it, no matter what they said. They always seemed to feel so smart for getting it right on the first try.

I was happy to finally get a common last name too. Nobody could spell or pronounce my old name. But even now, sometimes people spell my name "Murry" instead of "Murray". You just can't win.

No, kidding.  Though I have Hollywood to thank for both getting my name wrong, and having a good way to help people get it right.

"Like Tom Cruise?"  people always say.

I now answer, "Nope.  Like Penelope Cruz."

HA!

You just can't win.

The day I saw the name "Michael" spelled "Mykle," I realized that ANY name can be misspelled (or mispronounced) because people are forever making up alternatives and you can't assume. But you're really in a pickle when people spell your name wrong by spelling it right. Parents who would do this to a child totally mystify me and I think they should be sentenced to a forced legal name change using the most outrageous spelling of their names that can be dreamed up by a jury of their peers -- but that's a whole other thread.

But I loved the family who named their dog Fido, spelled "Phydeau."

Haha, guilty on all counts! Did you live in the Fox Valley, by chance? "Bubbler" was very local to there, at least at first.

Funny, I though "bubbler" was a New Englandism--it's what I grew up saying in MA.  And it's "soda" here, too.

ETA: "Phydeau"--LOVE IT!!

Marcia,

You said your name was hard to pronounce, but you didn't say how to pronounce it.

I would guess HER-nuh, but without the R, kind of umlaut-y German-ish????

Anne Marie Pah-chay (just kidding.  It's PACE like SPACE CADET)

No kidding? Cool! And doesn't "bubbler" make perfect sense? :)

Anne Marie, my last name is pronounced HAY-nee. We've gotten our share of Green Acres jokes. Out in CO, where there's a tiny town by that name, they say "HOE-nee." We stopped there while on our honeymoon out west, and were a little bummed that the pronunciation was different. The guy that founded the town is on my husband's family tree, though. Yes, I'm sure the "real German" pronunciation is just as you say.

And I was kind of hoping I was right to read your name as Pace, like race, but we know where "assume" gets us.

When my son and DIL got married, there were two unrelated women in the wedding with the same last name. Same spelling, pronounced differently!

People are forever mispronouncing my last name - the fully Anglicized pronunciation uses a hard J sound, so it's "Jung" as in the first half of "Jump" and the second half of "Lung." The first attempt is almost always "Young" or "Yoong," however. Numerous people have asked me in person if I'm related to Carl Jung, despite the fact that I'm clearly not of white European descent...

My maiden name is Ha
My married name is Oh
The biggest mistake I made was hyphenating the name on one of my cards because I was too lazy to switch officially to Oh.

Ha-Oh is apparently the hardest thing in the world to pronounce.

May I speak to Haaaaaoooooohh?
Heyyo?
Hawho?
Haho?
Hooowww?

I would laugh my butt off.

Oh dear. I always think of you as Mike Young. (and I'm always thinking of you, Mike. We can't go on meeting like this....) FWIW, there was a Betsy Jung in my high school class who pronounced it with a hard J, and she clearly WAS of white European descent.

No worries, Anne, I'm pretty used to it, and I do think the English spelling of my family name (despite being a common one) is a bit misleading. The Korean pronunciation is a soft "j-ch" sound - sorta halfway between - so it could easily have been Anglicized as "Chung" instead of "Jung."

When I was going by Megan people used to correct me on the pronunciation of my name all the time! I would say "Meggan", they would look puzzled and ask me to spell it, I would do so, and they would then say "Oh, you mean Meeeegan." No, actually, I don't.

As I said earlier, this is one reason why I published as Meg, just to avoid the issue. But recently someone introduced me as "Meeeg", which is unfathomable to me. And my publisher has been spelling my surname incorrectly in promotional materials. I think I'm going to have to learn to, as my daughter says, a la Madagascar, just 'smile and wave'. :)

Maybe it is because they would not want to associate themselves?

One curious question:
Has anyone come up against mispronunciation in modern technology?
I had an mp3 player a few years back where the display was aging.  One song which should have read Prosperity and Beauty ended up as Property and Batty.  There were  some other quirky titles to go with it.  Sometimes I didn't bother looking at the display, I wouldn't have been able to make them out anyway.

Yama, Yama, Red Pajamas.  I will never learn to say otherwise.

On the publisher front, I heard someone get a little agitated about the ALA awards (Don't they always?  The people reading the awards seem to pronounce the publishers and authors in all kinds of ways) about Hachette Book Group.  Apparently, the proper pronunciation is just plain "HAchet."  Nothing fancy, like "haSHETT."

Someone mentioned something about David Levithan the other day and I realized that I'd always thought of him as "David Leviathan."  I'm sure he's heard that one before (sorry, David!).  But now I'm wondering how to really pronounce it.  Can someone tell me--is it LEH-vih-thun?

I have a French surname, but nobody has ever seriously pronounced it with a French pronunciation in front of me.  Maybe if I won an award.

My wife used to be very naive. She worked retail before we got married, and I once heard her telephone a customer whose last name was Kuntz. Oh yes. Even in German, the name is always pronounced with an "oo" sound, and many Americans have changed the spelling thus, so as to avoid the unpleasant. When I explained it to the poor dear, she was mortified.

Anon, if no one answers to the contrary, I would go with "Stoy-er." I've met folks before with names like that, and they all drop the first "r."
