Title: My used book store find!
Post by: DonnaE on March 23, 2010, 03:09 PM
Today was a weird day - but not necessarily in a bad way. :) I took my sweet girlies to a used book store/book trader here in town today and found this:

The Writer's Guide to Everyday LIfe in the 1800's by Marc McCutcheon

I don't write historcial stuffs YET...but it was too good of a deal to pass up. The book looks brand new and I got it for 1/4 of the original price. I'm so pysched!!

:yay  I have this book at home in my collection of research books. It's a great book. Congratulations on getting it for such a reasonable price! (I've also got several other time periods in that collection. They are great research books.)

Yep, I've got that one too (and most of the other writer's guides to historical periods) that I found at a used bookstore.  They are gold mines!

Those are hard to find and can be pricey from dealers. I do find that the volumes vary in quality throughout the series, though.

Cool! What a great find. Isn't it strange how a how-to or reference book can get your fingers itching?

My kids burn CDs for me of their music, and I listen to them on my way to work. One son just gave me a new CD - and there's a creepy piece of music on it that makes me want to write a horror story every time I hear it. I don't read horror - I don't even watch horror movies - but I definitely want to write about something gone horribly awry. Go figure.

Our town library has a wonderful (60,000 volumes) booksale every summer. I volunteer to help set up and the perk is that I get first look at the history section. Scored a complete set of the Everyday Life in [fill in any of 12 historical periods here] for about 20 bucks!  I don't know that I'll ever write about the Vikings or Mesopatamia (sp?) -- but I'm ready!
